I bought a breastplate from decathlon >>>

http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/schooling-hunting-breastplate-1421698/

They only had fullsize left and my horse has a huge crest so thought it would be ok, it fits his neck but on the biggest setting but the two leather straps which clip on the saddle d-rings arn't fully tight as such but have about a hands-width of play in them. (if i made the neck strap tigher it would sit higher up his neck and tighten straps - but i understand it should be close to his withers)

Should these be tight, or is the idea they only come into play if the saddle were to slip back?

The strap going down to the girth I could fit my handwidth in, and the same on the neck band itself (which has elastic too if needed)

You should be able to make a fist and fit that under the strap between the saddle D ring and the bit where it passes up over his withers.

Hope that makes sense but if not then shout me and I'll try again :)

So these straps on both sides arn't holding the saddle in place at all as such - and only come into play if the saddle were to slide back?

thanks!

Yep, that's the idea anyway. I think if you did them tight to begin with there would be times they would be pulling, especially if the horse were to stretch down like when jumping etc.

I would be happier if someone would confirm that though because I haven't been asked since taking horsey tests and that was a good few years ago!
