So having come to the conclusion my new boy is a self harmer, I need to start booting up for turnout I think.
Can anyone recommend breathable brushing boots or similar for turnout please? I'm worried about over heating.

My physio recommended them to me with my previous horse when I used to event, especially as I used to do the long format and the horse had the boots on for a long period of time.

She said they are proven to be better for airing the tendons and preventing them from overheating. They have 360 degree air cooling technology - as the horse gallops air passes through the front vents, circulates and exits out of the side vents. This process allows a constant stream of cold air to pass through over the tendons, keeping them cool.

Research in respect of air cooled eventing boots http://www.befred.org/docs/3637.pdf which says Evento boots are better than PE boots. Price difference is double that of PE boots.

I don't know how either type of boots would fare in a turnout situation. Shop around for prices, they vary such a lot depending on whether you go to PE directly or ebay or another supplier.

I know the pain of a serial self harmer, mine is booted for turnout on vets advice. I have used a few brands over the years, I like the LeMieux Carbon Mesh wrap boots at the moment, they are really affordable. I also like their breathable event boots too (I think they are the Stealth Event boots or something similar) good old Woof Wear club boots or similar are pretty good as well, not overly sweaty in my experience.

I wouldn't recommend the Husk boots, they are totally breathable yes but the quality of them is not worth the money and do not stand up well for use in turnout. I have my eye on these for the summer, look the same and far more reasonable than the Husk ones, https://uhlan.co.uk/collections/boots seem to be well reviewed too.

Best to have a few pairs to change between, and some white/lighter coloured boots for the summer months to help keep legs cool.

I've got the same problem; big and crazy young horse who already knocked himself a splint.
I use the lemieux mesh brushing boots which work fine, however the inner " leather' protection area is not ventilated.
I came across the Woof wear iVent hybrid boots on the internet this morning. I cannot find any review at all. They seem great though

I have a serial offender in the field, she's in equilibrium tri-zone all sport boots, they've worked really well over the last 12 months. I did have to replace the hind pair which took the brunt of her taking out the fence last autumn but thankfully she was fine. So I call that a win. They've got the research behind them both for not overheating and for all-round leg protection.
