Did you see how much this horse went for, not sure of his lot number but he was

3 years
colt
bay with a star(I think)
Was Filthy with a thick layer of Mud and had tons and tons of burrs tangled in his mane and tail!

I really wanted to take him home!

Oh and did you see that poor Grey mare?

She looked quite old and was heavily in foal, her spine was sticking up a good couple of inches she was that thin! I hope someone nice brought her and gave her the love and care she deserves!

You know Santa's little helper that is exactly why I could not go to sales on a regular basis unless I had the money and expertise to pick up some horses and ponies from sad situations, turn them around and find loving homes.
Sadly I live in the real world and know that will never be possible unless I happen upon a huge windfall, but heh one can dream .....
As for the little blighters that sold for so little I just feel so sorry for them. Especially with the credit crunch we have now and feel this situation can only get worse.
But you see for me anyway, what I cannot get my head around is the little monetary value there is in horses and ponies at such sales.
If people can pick them up for so cheap then how the hell can they be guaranteed good homes, especially when seemingly in most cases they are fetching less than you could pick up a cross breed dog from a backyard breeder.
I know that dogs and horses are entirely different and that horses require more care and cash to care for them than dogs but I just cannot understand why I see ad after ad in my local paper for pure breed dogs for hundreds of pounds!
It really baffles me to be honest
frown.gif

How can a dog whose lifespan is so much more less than a horse/pony generally, and who in my opinion cannot offer as much enjoyment as a horse, be worth so much more financially?
It cannot all be down the cost of keeping surely?
I mean dogs are not exactly that cheap are they?
Once you add up, food, vet bills, jabs/worming, insurance, bedding/toys etc Not to mention the time taken out of every day life for most people in walking, grooming, nail clipping and other day to day, week to week care routines.
It really does baffle me, it really does.
For example there is an ad today in my local paper ( during a time of a supposed credit crunch), for Staffs bull puppies for £350. There were some other dogs breeds for sale at around £700 a few days ago and even cats ( not pedigree) were being advertised at £25.
If I had that amount of money to spend, who knows how many ponies I could have picked up at the Brecon sales.
That makes me feel very sad to be honest.
Horses and ponies are worth so much more to be honest in my opinion.
If they can be allowed to sell for so little then it is little wonder that so many horses and ponies are dumped, neglected or cruelly treated in my opinion. There lives are valued so little if sale reports are anything to go by.
Sad, very sad

no Mary....

we are full to the rafters at Chez JM......

No buying for us til next march...or selling..unless they get a good home/price.

i have 20 in the "for sale" paddock as well as 4 "keepers" ATM..

I don't "need" anymore mouths to feed...but if i'm offered any little people through "situations", then i'll make room...

I know this will sound harsh, but at least Potters will dispatch them properly, as I presume that's where they'll end up.
Better that, than a slow death through lack of feed in the current economic climate.

Ive never been to any markets or sales... but just by query... Are any of them ridden horses etc?

or do you have to buy them and take them home to find out?!

i use to do that a few years back, as Abbatoir prices were good and i was guarenteed a mark up on the ponies.....

i stopped doing it because ponies were making over "meat money" at markets....

but things have taken a turn back......and i have to say, i will be taking the same route again...keep the viable, take the rest to Potters.....

both, EF....

at Brecon..even though its quite primitive, you do get the oppertunity to try any pony you ae interested in...be it backed..by that, the welsh have their own adgendas!!..or a youngster.

it can be ridden/trotted up etc.

Thats really quite interesting- how do you know the dates of brecon market?

Also: Are they put in market normally because they 'broken' in some way or purely to be sold and make some money?

ie: are there ages lied about, can they have say extremely bad ringbone and be buted up so noone knows until they get home?

Sorry if it sounds dull.

JM, what is the nearest sale to this area (by that I mean south west?) I have never been but have always wanted to; just view thats all.

Its a very sorry state of affairs isn't it? And I agree that Potters may be a better option for many of these poor sods

Staffs - It really baffles me as well, I cannot understand how the people who breed the ponies make any money, OK so most of them have never been handled, not been wormed or weaned (ie. not had money spent on them) but surly they have to sell them with a passport? No idea how much it costs to get a passport but surly it would be more then the measly £5 the foals make in the ring? So what is the point in it, why breed poor quality foals that are more then likely going to end up as meat, I really don't understand it! How do they make money?

I could easily have brought a young cob today but unfortunately due to my situation at the moment I could not afford the lump sum to actually buy it (OK so may only have been about £200 but still don't have that at the moment), The costs of upkeep did not worry me.
