'Bred in the Pink' what does this mean?

A horse with Pink papers had both parents graded in a given stud book. I think this expression is a derivation of the old "bred in the purple" meaning extremely well bred (purple being the colour of royalty)

lol, I was just going to say it means they're mixing their metaphors but you explained it nicely

Pink does not only mean from graded parents it also means the blood line can be traced back 4 generations on both sides. You can have a horse bred froma graded mare with only one generation of traceability...this horse would not be classed as having pink papers.

If only the damn was graded, it wouldn't have pink papers anyway would it? Both parents have to be graded for pinks.

So ANY registered/'pedigree' breed can be born in the pink?
Blimey, my Quarter Horses and Paints trace way back to good old Eclipse and beyond, I reckon they qualify then.

I had only heard the expression concerning warmbloods before now.

So then it *is* because of the colours of the papers... all German sports breeds have pink passports. I am confused

Basically yes - the colour of the papers of graded horses, both of whose parents are also graded - is pink. I think it is only the warmblood studbooks that use this colour but am prepared to stand corrected on that.
