After losing 2 dogs last year we feel ready to start looking. I would like a medium height dog as we have a JR already and hubby will be getting another lab at some point. Will be a farm home so lots of walks and outside life.

My thoughts at the moment are cocker spaniel or springer spaniel. Will only be getting one that has full health checks and KC from healthly parents. Am seeing lots advertised for silly money that are not KC. Any other suggestions welcome. Thanks

Wire coated breed would be my suggestion.I’d vote a medium size schnauzer.
Don’t get a poodle on a farm unless you intend to keep it closely clipped. The wool is a magnet for dirt, seeds etc.

What breeds have you had before?
Will the dog be up on the sofa for cuddles, how much time for walking, young kids around or lots of visitors, are you happy to do lots of training, livestock nearby, does it need to be sociable with other dogs, would you want working or show lines and what do you plan to do with the dog?
are you looking for same size or smaller than the lab?

I mean I say it every time but my whippets would love farm life (with the bonus of being horizontal the entire time they're in the house) or a corgi if you were wanting something slightly less vertical but without being a small dog as such.

I have had a cocker spaniel and although they are lovely, I could not wear mine out. I think if you lived on a farm and they had the opportunity to be outside a lot, they would be fine though.

I am very fond of border collies and whippets because they have nice natures. Have you considered a Patterdale terrier? They are a lot of fun.

My other idea would be a beagle because they are a nice size and love lots of exercise. They can be led by their noses though and get bored easily. But I just love them!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. We have had bulldogs, labs, jr, border collies, beagles, bassets , poodles , cocker German shepherds, staffy, birder terriers and springers before. Loved them all so it’s hard now to choose a breed. Definitely wanting a puppy so the search continues.
