OH and I are looking at getting our "first" dog. We have both had dogs at home when growing up but this will be our first solo dog.

I was wondering if anyone could suggest breeds that would be suitable as OH and I have differing opinions.

We live in a 3 bed house with an average sized garden. We both work but the dog would not be left for more than 3 hours on its own. With this in mind something less vocal would be preffered.
Long walks are not a problem and ideally it would be able to come to the yard with me.

OH loves collies but I am not convinced that one would be mentally stimulated in this environment.

Any suggestions?

Border Terrier! Will fit in with your lifestyle and love to come to the yard with you; they're the sort that want to do whatever you want to do and can relax when you're not there.

Collies and spaniels are really working dogs, they need to be kept busy, busy and can be hyper, though must admit I'm bias, I'm not a fan of any of them!

Whippets are the best dogs in the world IMHO. they are practically perfect in every way, love long walks, are quite and clean at home, love coming to the yard with you to see the horses and while you were out I'm sure would be more than happy to amuse themselves (usually by emptying the contents of the bin onto the kitchen floor in my experience).
