The Irish horse thread has just got me thinking.

what traits do you see in your animals that you feel are down to their genes/type as opposed to learned?

Of my animals I think these traits are inherent :

My Basset = stubborn, clever (but in a clever to please himself way), placid (lover not a fighter), fairly aloof

My ID = Clever (in a how best to minimise wastage of energy way

), dependable, bold, observant, very natural jump shape.

The WB I ride = Sharp (able to move very quick, which I'm told is helpful with tempi changes!), Spooky (this seems linked into the sharpness), non-aggressive, affectionate, talented mover and natural jumper.

These are just my own observations and I wondered whether they compared to other peoples?

interesting. I like this sort of thread!

My Whippets: humble, affectionate, quiet and meek and generally good as gold... also a pair of theiving swine who will take anything not nailed down the moment your back is turned

My Horse (TBxWelsh): she is sharp (TB) and spooky about stupid things (Welsh). Good doer (Welsh), good jumper (bit of both). She doesn't grow a winter coat (TB) but does get feathers (welsh). She is pretty fine (TB) but only 15.1hh (welsh). She is also tricky stroppy and generally difficult (I think this is the mare

I think i have posted this before but for me :

ID - clever, sane, sensible, sometimes stubborn, unbelievably brave, honest and above all else versatile

** Cue post from SSM about CBs **

Have a Trak x TB - v intelligent (Trak), prone to fizziness (both!), grows a winter coat like a native (must be Trak?!), very fast (TB), loves to jump (both?!). Not a fan of flatwork/dressage (prob more TB).

I looked after a relative's two black labs recently - they are incredibly loyal, clever and brilliant with people & horses, so I'd say very typical of the breed. Unfortunately, the older one 'retrieved' a dead duck (swallowed it whole - she's a baby, not learnt the right way to do it yet!) and regurgitated it entire on the living room floor......urgh.

Lurcher; Intelligent, affectionate, very fast and will steal any food that is not tied down or locked away. the Whippet side of her breeding will find the most comfortable place anywhere to settle down

JRT;bouncy, curious, bouncy, determined..did I say bouncy?

IDxTB; the ID side is gentle, willing, devoted, the TB side is the alter ego

DalesxTB; stubborn...and a mare

Highland; total dude, willing, adaptable, but can rev up when needed

Both my Vizslas have been lively, full of fun, extremely friendly, intelligent and very vocal.
My pointer is very gentle and sweet, a little bit dim and has very strong hunting instincts. I've only had one so don't know if they are all like this.
My current horse is an anglo-arab x warmblood - she is extremely intelligent (which can be a blessing and a curse) and is a bit of a jekyll and hyde character - can be laid back and lazy in some situations and a loon in others!

Aw I LOVE Vizlas!!

Can imagine "when she is good she is very very good, and when she is bad she is horrid!" fits very well

Spanish Mastiff-- dopey by day, great guard dog by night, eating machine, bit drooly, stupid! gentle with other animals.
