When I sent Skye to stud the breeder gave me antibiotics on return, she had to have half a tablet a day for 3 days, she said this was to prevent any infection and also to prevent the thing (which I can't remember the technical term or spell it!) where instead of pups you get a string of beads full of puss.

Apparently some people do it to prevent infections, however I don't think it's a good idea pumping drugs into a bitch that is hopefully in whelp. Should imagine it'd do more harm than good.

The breeder gave you antibiotics??????? I can't imagine that her vet would be very impressed with that. Very dangerous thing to do unless, of course, the breeder IS a vet . . . . .

They came from the vet.

But 3 days after mating surely they are dots, how many women continue smoking and drinking for the first month of pregnancy because they don't know that they are pregnant. I had 8 healthy babies so it didn't do my batch any harm.

a lot of breeders recommend giving antibiotics for 3to5 days prior to mating to kill off any infection and to prevent transmission to another bitch if the dog is used regularly at stud. most vets are happy to presribe for this reason.

Thats exactly it, some dogs can be 'dirty' and some bitches very 'open'. I was surprised more breeders hadn't heard of it.

As I posted above it used to be common practice, and maybe still is, to give the bitch anti biotics before mating, but after mating, whilst possibly protecting bitch and puppies, would not really protect the stud dog from infection .
