Pricing a stud...

Good looking dog, good confo, lovely mover, shown once and won. Low hipscore, registered, vaccs upto date, proven fertility and certainly knows his job. Excellent with other bitches/animals/children, very friendly e.t.c but would not get on with other dogs (males). House trained and can live out...

How on earth do you begin to price one?

A bit like selling a car or something - ask around and find out what others with a similar 'product' charge!

Stud fees are crazy now, I think around £350-£450 in the breed my mum/sister are in, but Mum's two stud dogs are show champions which always increases the price

ETS - oh, just remembered, when the Rhodesian Ridgeback at the yard was used at stud once his owners asked for a puppy as a stud fee - sounds like they got a very good deal to me

Do you mean to sell or to use?

Well you know how much you had to pay for your dog pup so possibly treble it; any more and they might just as well wait for a puppy themselves I think. You'd possibly make more by keeping and using yourselves. But obviously with a dog, the home's the thing.

As to using, it seems to be half the price of a puppy atm!
When we had a KC stud Border, we always offered either free returns or stud fee back, or even with people we knew, not to pay until the pups were born. We never had a problem dealing that way and he never failed!

How's Jen?

All of the stud dogs in our breed club stand at £650.00

not cheap!!

Gina, my pups sell for £650, other breeders are priced at £650-1k.

I want a local home for him though so not so fussy about price, just not sure what to put him up at....

Its for selling, bought another dog with different lines to all of my bitches but I can't keep two dogs when studs don't really get on and I don't have many bitches.

Jen is very well!! FAT lol (she always was an excellent do'er) and has a little section A as her field mate, she looks soooo happy

She deserves it. Will have to send you pics.

Do the two dogs not get on then? We've got 2 stud dogs that live together fine. Sorry, not having a go, but don't agree with getting rid of one to bring in another

Even as a stud dog, you probably wont get the same for him as you would a puppy.

Hope you find him a good home

Wow, you must be the only breeder I know with dogs(males) that get along, fair play to your boys

Its widely among breeders that although bitches always seem to get along great, two males with bits won't.

Don't actually have him here yet but I know Nero won't get along with him.

I don't think you're having a go at all, my bitches are with me for life but I think its completely unfair to keep two entire males with a small number of bitches.

As I say price is not such an issue for me, but I want to price him at a saleable price. The only two examples I have is one that was sold (with higher hipscores) for 1k and the other is a my friend who breeds Malamutes (pups sell for £800.00) who recently sold a stud to Scotland for BIG money.

Do you think £500.00 is fair?

Can't really help with price as not sure what prices are for adults in your breed but think you probably have 2 markets here. You could advertise him widely and sell him as a stud dog, possibly even overseas and command quite a high price, or sell him locally more as a pet and probably not get as much as you would for a puppy.

Has he had many bitches or would he be okay going to a pet home and maybe castrated? This is the problem with keeping a stud dog from the same line as your bitches, you soon reach a point where you can't use him on your own girls and unless he is getting loads of visiting bitches it is difficult. We only once kept a GSD stud dog, he was slightly different lines but only used him a couple of times ourselves, we then used other dogs. We did keep him but I am not very good at parting with anything

Luckily he was used a bit at stud by others which kept him happy. He also got on well with most other males, and travelled happily to shows with a friends GSD stud dog, but they were unusual in this although I do know some people who keep GSD studs together.

We've had more trouble with bitches to be honest, not so much now but in the past. I think I'd plump for a price inbetween 800 and 1000, he's proven isn't he?

The stud fee is alwasy the same as the price as a puppy (well in showing it is) our stud is 1000 and we ONLY breed to approved, tested bitches ONLY!
