hi everyone, i was just wondering if any of you can help me. I have a very good competition mare (nearly Grand Prix from Holland) and was thinking about breeding from her. she is still competing at the moment and was thinking about either AI or embryo transfer. Can someone advice me on how to go about it and where to send her to etc.? i m based in the South West. Thank you

If she is still competing then embryo transfer would be a good option. There are plenty of centres around the country. One very large one near you (Beaufort ET Centre), and some smaller operations that also offer ET. ET is expensive, but allows her to compete throught the pregnancy, and removes the danger of complications throughout and at foaling.

Basically, if you send her to an ET centre, they organise insemination etc. with you and the relevant stud. They pick a couple of mares from their recipient herd, that are most closely synchronised with your mare (the donor), then they flush and transfer the embryo to the recipient (or recipientS if more than one embryo is recovered).

There are other options to have the mare ET'd at home if you really can't take her out of training for 2-4 weeks. Speak to your vet, get personal recommendations etc.

It's an expensive process, but more than worth the expense if your mare is top quality, and is competing. Hope that helps.

thank you for your help. I was thinking about sending her away to a centre but I m just very very particular about where she goes. I never knew you could do it at home. I need to find a vet though as my own vet is not a breeding specialist and only recommended centres. He didn t know of anyone offering this service to be done at my home.

The "ET-at-home" idea is fairly new. It takes a lot of work, and requires specialist knowledge and mobile ET facilities. It does mean, however, that you can keep the mare at home and therefore reduce livery costs. You can either provide your own recipients, or recipients can be found for you. I'm not sure that many (or any) vets are able to offer this service, but it is available in the South West. PM me if you want more details

I'm not sure what PMs are (new to all this). Who is offering this service in the south west? I would be very interested to learn more about this service.

Tigerduck..........if you wish to PM (private message) a user on this forum you click on top of their user name, this take you to their homepage, then you click on the option to "send a private message".

We are not adversely allowed to advertise any services on HHO (part of the T&C's).

Incidently if your mare is Grand Prix and still competing, what is her name, we must have seen her in H&H in the results......
