Morning All,

Not having a panic - just curious really.

A few people have expressed suprise that Amy is pregnant. Now she is a maiden - and to me looks pregnant as her shape is different to what she normally looks like.

However, I'd be really interested to hear others experiences of maiden pregnancies. I don't think she's spat it out - but you never know.

Hopefully people like SallyF, SN and MFH will reply - plus any others.

Dont panic
Below is a pic of one of my mares due in 15 days.
This is second foal she was smaller last year and hardly dropped at all.
She just carries them high as foal came out just the same size as the others last year.

Ah thanks Sally. I would say that this was Amy's general shape - however, not as developed obviously as she is much further off.

Not really having a panic - what will be and all that. Have my eye on a very nice three year old if it goes pear shaped.

Thankyou she is one of 3 half or full sisters that i have out of my old head stud book graded small hunter mare.
Sadly although she was one of the best riding horse/small hunter foals shown in the country the year she was born she is lame after a horrific accident at a show as a yearling so will never go to any parties with her babies.
 
If in any doubt a rectal examination by your vet would definately tell you.

Like women, mares are all different and carry differently. I have had maiden mares look like they are not carrying to those that are rather large....

As you know i've been having doubts about one of my mares, but looking at her i think she must be in-foal. Like you say, what will be will be (just damn annoying if they aren't in-foal).
 
I so know how you feel but don't panic yet!

If you had seen Twiggy a fortnight ago in real life, not just those pic's posted last week, you would have said pigs will fly - certainty! Now, she is completely different but I do also think because we see them every day, we don't notice changes until they are big changes; does that make sense?
Although it's too late to do anything about it I had vet take a look and do a hands in on her. His first words were 'well, she's the strangest shape if she is; she certainly doesn't look it.' Great confidence boost that was!

It's not 100%, he'll check her again next week when she has her booster but in layman words (the only ones I understand!) he expected to be able to swish his hand from side to side and slide up over the uterus but instead it disappeared down a dark deep hole meaning something was holding it down out of reach, which all being well is the Twiglet! He's still being cagey and hedging his bets but since then, just to spite me, she has altered shape completely and now looks (to me) as a maiden mare a month off foaling should look. (similar to Sally's, though T is very scruffy and covered in mud!

I have yet to see the foal move at all but T will sometimes throw her head up in surprise and give a grunt which we take to mean the shrimp is playing football in there somewhere!

Take heart, and get your vet to do a hands in when he's next on the yard to put your mind at rest; (so you have a shared journey) after all, sadly, if she isn't, there's nothing you can do about it but it might enable you to get her ready early to return back to stud. I so hope she is in foal, I know how much you want this baby (you and me both).
 
Thanks MFH - no not panicking, just curious about others experiences. And of course, remember you posting about Twiggy last week - which is very reassuring!!

I've become very philosophical about the whole thing. In my mind she's in foal - no doubt. And I wouldn't have questioned it if a couple of people hadn't commented that they were suprised that she was in foal. But if it doesn't appear - so be it.

Still seems so far off, althouth in reality time is storming on 64 days (whose counting????)

That's the thing about horses isn't it, they do make you face up to facts and take it on the chin? It doesn't stop us being elated or disappointed but a deep sigh and 'let's get cracking' soon gets us back on track! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.
Horses are good character builders I think, parents could do a lot worse than let their children get involved with them - they might never have full pockets again, but think of the benefits!

As for the highs and lows. I can't explain them to people who aren't involved with horses. Words simply are not enough sometimes.
 
That is very true and she is main stud book registered whatever so doesnt need to be presented for grading.
there is no doubt that quality will nearly always produce quality and from her yearling she is definately worth breeding from.
 
I posted about my filly last week as my vet had scanned her not in foal, so I sold her, only to get a call to ask why she was bagging up! Long story, but I bought her back.

She is a maiden, and looking at her you wouldn't know she was in foal, but my vet has since confirmed that there's something in there! She has just over 2 weeks to go and this pic was taken just a couple of days ago.

My friend's TB was a maiden last time, and up until the last two weeks you couldn't really tell she was in foal as she just looked fit (she had a broken shoulder, so not in any forms of work, just going out). Then in the last two weeks she suddenly dropped her belly, started bagging up and then went 5 days over her due date. She also got her figure back very quickly

You know the reason your mouth is open and your horses eyes are shut........... a judge is standing in front of you mooning - the horse cant bear to look and you are shocked beyond belief.................

From how you decribe her i was expecting something really plain and hairy which she isnt at all.

Ah, thank you.

However, she does look pretty plain and hairy now. I'll post some pics of her taken recently tomorrow.
