Breeding experts

I'd say no bigger than 16hh and if this big something with a "lighter" frame perhaps.

Also, it depends what you are wanting to breed? I'm guessing something bigger than her?

Putting her to something bigger won't necessairly mean your going to get something bigger than your mare.

Our mare who is 16.1hh has bred 3 foals before we had her,
the first is 17.3 by a 15.3 stallion
the second is 16h, by a 16.2 stallion
and the third is 14.2 by a 16.2 stallion

Our 12.2hh has had 2 now,
her first is 13.1 by a 14.2 welsh section D stallion
and her second is bigger than her at 6 months old so is going to hopefully make 14hh and he is by a 14.2 light boned warmblood pony stallion.
So it can vary....

Is this your first time breeding?
If it was me i'd want to put her to something of a similar size first time to reduce the chances of a huge foal and a difficult birth for a maiden mare and possibly first time owner.

You may have more response if you put this in "breeding" there are some very experienced people in there who are helpful :)

Okay thankyou for the reply.
No i wouldnt be breeding some stud is interested in loaning her as a broodmare and i just wanna make sure they wouldnt put her to anything too big. x

It is my understanding that the mare will only carry what she is able. I believe that there was research carried out with Clydesdales and Shetlands (AI presumably). I haven't seen the research papers though so am only summising. I put my TB (14.3) to a 16.3 RID and foal will struggle to make 15 hands which kind of backs up this theory I think.
