clue in the title really - my mare is in foal at the moment, and Ive got her stallion booked for next year already (though I have it narrowed down to a choice of 3 and will decide for definate in October!) so its not happening anytime soon, if at all...

BUT

shes only 15.1, shes a winning sprint mare, and is dam of winning offspring. Becuase shes small, Its been bandying about in the back of my mind that maybe I should think of breeding a foal with the intention of it becoming a racing pony - but what sort of stallions do people use? RPs arent allowed to be bigger than 14.2 I dont think, but for obvious reasons would need to be quick and Im struggling to think of what kind of stallion could produce ( not the "could" here !!) the "perfect" racing pony....

I know there are small TB stallions about - but its the more pony type im curious about....

anyone got any ideas??

Warmwell Racing Demon is a good pony stallion that produces useful allrounders and has, I think, had racing pony winners. I have had 2 by him in my yard both evented , very quality, scopey jumpers, fab temperaments and fast with long rangy strides, the type to get too fast penalties BE without trying.

He stands in Dorset so local enough for you if you are in the SW.

Oh thats interesting - thankyou !! I am indeed in the SW - he would be about 20 miles or so away from us..

one to keep in mind !! :D

Agree with minesadouble.

You'd have to be careful that the foal doesn't grow oversized because even though your mare is little she may have others in her pedigree that are bigger. Then you'd have a size that wouldn't be as popular.
I personally would go for a British Riding Pony around the 13.2hh size..you could then register the foal BRP and if you then decide not to race it at least it would be able to do most other jobs :)

apologies - didnt come online yesterday so only just seen these, you lot are amazing, thankyou very much !!

It suddenly hit me yesterday at work that the other way I could look would be a small arab - so I think the choices are out there its just a case of thinking and picking brains of the right people, which you lot most definately are !!

Just got to get this one out safely first - and then give it more thorough thought.

Thankyou all again :D

If you go the Arab route, stick with the racing blood lines. In fact go with a stallion that is/has been racing & shown some form. The offspring will stand more chance of being sucessful & worth a bit more. AA's along with PBA's used to have their own races back in the late 80's early 90's. I think they then did away with the PB's, which was a shame. My little PB kept up with a few of the ex TB racers, no problem especially over the longer distances.

Thankyou Magic - thats sensible advice, I wouldnt put Red to a TB that hadnt got good form and a decent rating, makes a lot of sense to use the same rules with a pony stallion (whatever the breed) but I will be in danger of worrying so much about the height thing that I will forget the need to be good !!

You lot are brilliant, thankyou so much :)

Personally I would want something that not only will be quick but also versatile enough for other PC activities. I'm not sure how much of a market there is for out and out racing ponies so would possibly be looking at putting her to a 13.2hh riding pony or welsh sec b type.
