Hi

My mare was retired due to kissing spines a few months ago. I asked my vet if she could still have a foal and he said yes, it wouldn't be a problem.

I spoke to a friend today who does quite a lot of breeding and she said she would be very wary about breeding from a mare with KS.

I don't know who is correct - vet or friend?

Any thoughts or advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Couldnt she have had a kissing spine operation?,I really dont think it would be a problem for her foaling, but I'm not sure about it being hereditary.

Sadly it's too bad for surgery - 8 vertebrae. She couldn't have the steroid injections either for the same reason. Has been treated with shock wave therapy so in theory she shouldn't be in any pain from it.

i would speak to a specialist vet and find out persoanlly as i would be wary for the mares sake and the hereditary fact

I don't think there is evidence for this being hereditary, though if your mare has poor conformation (eg short /lordotic back , which predisposes them to the condition) this may well be. Go for a stallion witha good performance record and strong back conformation. I dont think the kissing spines should affect the ability to breed: I have a kissing spine horse and would have no hesitation breeding from it if it wasn't a gelding!

Many years ago a friend of mine took her mare to sven kold who diagnosed her with a kissing spine he said at the time as she was only seven to put her in foal and stretch her back.
Over the years the mare went on to have 3 foals none of which have had any problems with there backs .
The eldest is now in his teens and the second one eight so plenty of time to have shown up.
