I have a pony mare who is 21 yo, she is in good health & condition.
She has had 3 foals, the last one being 6 years ago. I am considering putting her in foal next year, whats your thoughts?
at the moment she lives an easy life and is nanny to our youngsters. She has to be carefully managed as can be prone to laminitis, this has stopped us sending her away to stud but as we now have our own colt she would be covered at home.
She is a much loved mare, a big performer and winner in her day, is she too old?

The fact that she already has had foals, she should be alright, but at her age, it may take longer to get her in foal, it's just like older women, it can take longer to get pregnant. I used to work at a stud, where it was all broodmares and yearlings, and all the broodmares were 18 to 22. So obviously, older mares can and do have foals. x

Is there a reason why you want to put her into foal? can she not just be a well cared for older horse?
