After seeing the quote "bred in the purple" etc. on some horse adverts... what exactly does this mean? Why attribute a colour to the breeding lines - is purple the best?

Comes from Ireland originally though not sure why
Doesn't actually relate to any breeding lines at all - just an old fashioned way of saying well bred.

Is this the same kind of thing then as ' having a purple patch' which I think refers to a winning streak.

Thinking a long way back to my primary school history lessons, I believe purple is the 'royal' colour as the senators etc used to wear it in ancient roman times!

Usually means horse for sale isn't actually much good, and they're trying to flog it on its breeding

A little pessamistic maybe, it will at least make a decent broodmare to sell the offspring as "bred in the purple"
Seriously though a lot of welshies will say they are bred in the purple however there is a little disillusion that everything with Nebo Black Magic in its passport is just that, however in reality since Nebo Black Magic appears in the majority of registered d's passports at least once this is really not the case. It was once bred in the purple would be more correct.

Aah ok, so its not really a proper thing then - I almost thought they had purple breeding papers which signified they were bred by a highly scored (by the specific breed society) stallion or something!!
