we plan to breed one litter from our jack russell who is 3 and the male dog is coming over on day 11 and 12 of her season.they know each other but are both first timers.how will we know if they have mated as were leaving them in a stable for the day

Unless you see it, you wont know if they've mated or not. In general best days to mate is between day 12 to 14 but I've read about a bitch, who refused to mate until on day 21 or 22 and then had a full litter. Some bitches are interested all through their season, some only around the right days and there is some bitches who will only stand during a few hours on one day in the season and that might not even be the the best day to mate!

Actually, I can't imagine a responsible stud dog owner allowing anybody to lend their dogs services under such conditions, do you have a contract that says who should pay for any possible damages to either of the dogs?
F.ex. during the hanging (the penis swells and can't be pulled out for in general 10 to 20 minutes), if either of the dogs panics, they could bite each other or if pulled loose, the penis could be damaged or the bitch could get damages on the inside. Also if the dog doesn't hang, you might want to lift up the bitches behind for a while, to make sure the sperm goes where you want it and doesn't come out.

Basically not anything I would recommend for a number of reasons. It might mean that you wont have time to do the things you normally would for one or some days but on other hand, if your bitch have puppies, you must be prepared to spend quite some daily time with them to socialize them properly etc.

Please don't leave them in a stable together

As FLH says there is a chance one or both could be injured. I know dogs mate in the street without problems, but the bitch can get away if not ready etc. If you confine them she could end up being "raped" and if she takes exception whilst they are tied it could be nasty. Or more likely as they are both maidens he will not manage to mate her and they will both just get worn out. There is also no guarantee that she will be ready on day 11 or 12, I have had a btich mate and conceive on day 23. I fyou really want a litter you need to supervise the mating, and quite possibly hold the bitch/help the dog.

You would be better taking the bitch to the dog and supervising them at all times and when they tie you need to hold onto them both as if either pull, the dog will suffer damage or the bitch could turn and snap at him.

Just out of curiosity have you done any research into what you're about to do? If you've not got time to supervise a couple of matings you're not going to have time to raise a litter of up to 8 puppies
