I have owned my horse over 5 years and he came to me with no information on his breeding (passport states unknown) which doesn't bother me at all however I was out riding the other day and someone randomly said "What a lovely horse, he looks like he is from Hungary"... I am now intrigued to see if I can find out more.

He has been branded on both sides of his neck and they are a combination of letters and numbers, someone suggested it could have been a postcode. Does anyone know where I could potentially find out more information on this?

Yes Hungarians do brand the neck - a brand on the neck is for a cross breed and a brand on the saddle area for a pure bred.

There will be three different brands. One either side at the top, just below the poll and the third on, I think, the right side at the bottom just in front of the wither. They indicate the county in Hungary where the horse was born, the year of birth, and which foal number that year it was.. But I can't remember which goes where.

If that sounds like the brand on your horse then yes it will be fairly easy to trace his early history as they do seem to keep pretty good records.

Hope that helps

Amazing thank you. So looking into this he is from Szolnok but I wonder how i can trace it back even further.

I think there's a breeders association that should be able to steer you in the right direction. Good luck - let us know what you find out, would be interesting if you could find out how he ended up here with 'unknown' breeding
