Hi, I have a Border Terrier and would like to use him as a stud dog. However....I am a complete novice and have no idea what to do apart from advertising him. Any help will be very welcome....

What are his lines like, had he had relevant health tests, does he work, have you shown him a little to see if he is a good example of his breed?

If you are just breeding him because he is 'nice' or you want to make money from stud fees, then just don't. Please.

My advice would be don't bother. However, if you do decide to go ahead there are several things you need to do. Firstly check out what health tests his breed has to have before being used at stud, presumably he is kc registered, if not you will need to do that so his offspring can be registered. He should be an excellent specimen of his breed, ideally having been shown successfully.
How old is he and has he mated a bitch before? If he hasn't be prepared for him to suddenly become far more interested in bitches. If he is getting regular bitches it will be fine, but if a dog only has the occasional bitch they can get very frustrated.
I would suggest your first port of call would be your nearest breed club, they should hopefully be able to give you some advice.

As suggested above you also really have to be responsible in where the off spring will end up? you will have no say in that and the people whos bitch he lines maybe complete knobbers that want to make a quick buck and wont offer come back for any of the puppies and therefor they could end up in rescue, we as a rescue get a fair few borders in, over all we get a hell of a lot of terriers in, how would you feel if yours dogs off spring ended up like this.
