Help - I'm thinking about putting my mare by Jumbo in foal next year. I like the look of Catherston Springsteen, but don't really know that much about him. My mare will hopefully event, so would like the foal to either be a potential eventer or dressage horse. My mare (chestnut !!) is very pretty and moves well, with good jump, bold, etc. but can have an attitiude (although, young horse, chestnut mare - not really anything that shouldn't be expected), but would like to ensure she goes to something with a level head.

Any suggestions . . . .

Springsteen is nice enough, very laid back. I warmed up with him once when Catherston used to have their clear round jumping days and Lizzie was schooling him in the arena and he was concentrating on his work really well considering that there were all of us numpties trying to warm up over the jumps!
He's ok, but do feel that he should really go to a pure thoroughbred mare if you wanted to produce an eventer from him, and as jumbo is half irish draught, perhaps a stallion with a little more TB blood might be better? Why not Catherston Dazzler as he has loads of TB blood? some of his stock really do move nicely, plus they have the boldness , speed and stamina for XC.

For temperament of offspring I'd breed to Bruce (Springteen) over Darkie (Dazzler) any day of the week. They are both in my top 5 of my fav boys I've ever worked with, but Bruce is incredibly sweet and bidable - babies tend to be the same....

To the OP. What size is your mare - height, bone/type etc... and how correct is she? There is an awful lot of horse to Bruce and he does throw his LF leg a little. He moves fantastically though!! REALLY powerful and expressive - used to love lunging him

His bloodlines are both SJ and Dressage, which I find attractive too.

This is my friend's Springsteen filly (3yo now, pic was taken in July this year):

(excuse my mum, and bear in mind she'd been on box rest for about 8 weeks after a kick in the field)
She's out of a full TB mare who used to event at intermediate. Darcy is a complete sweetie, so easy to do and such a lovely character. She was broken this summer and took to it like a duck to water - in about three days of being sat on she was walking and trotting around the school with her owner like a pro, responding to leg and rein aids and generally looking like she was 5yo! She got a first diploma at her grading last year, and this year won the 3yo in-hand section at PAVO (last week). She has fantastic movement (just like her dad, her mum trotted like a sewing machine) and a good jump (she was loose jumped over teeny tiny cross poles as a 2yo) and is all set to event and dressage when she's older.
She's just fab, I love her to bits!
The mare went to Catherston Liberator the next year, apparently the baby (2yo filly) is also stunning (although I don't know much else about her or much about Liberator).

My mare is approx 16 hh out of a TB x WB mare and she's quite fine, def more on side of TB than ID. She does have a slight dish so not 100% straight, but nothing that affects performance, etc. My mare has got enough boldness, etc for eventing so not too worried if she doesn't go to something with TB in and she does move well, but not big powerful paces.
I would like her to go to something with substance without being too chunky !!! Any other stallions that may be suitable ???

Simallarion - your poor mum being on box rest all those weeks . . . or did you mean the horse ? ? ?

Many thanks for the info & photo - mare looks great - think will see if I can see springsteen in action as he seems to be favouriate at the mo.

Ooo is that smashing pumpkin? If it is I saw her at the BEF thing at Catherston last year and really liked her.

Also saw Springsteen out competing in the DTM at Sparsholt and he was lovely, he would definitely be high on my list if I had a TB mare to breed from.

OMG!!! I looked after her when she was a wee baby when she came back to the stud to be bred back to Libs!! We've had this convo haven't we? Bless her she had choke one night and we had to get the vet out to give her muscle relaxants - was very scarey, choke in a foal! I really, really MUST dig out my Catherston pics, as I know I have some of her and her dam.

MooseMum - haha I didn't proof read that bit as I put it in just before posting, hence why it came out wrong!

SN - yes I remember you saying about all that! Hasn't she grown...

She's even grown into her head more now!

Oh and oops, I've just realised I said she won the PAVO 3yo class but she actually came second. She may as well have won though, the grin on her owner's face said it all!
