Hi,

I had my mare put into foal last year and she is due in july. However, being new to all this I have no idea what to expect. You can now tell that she is pregnant and is getting bigger by the day and more and more tired!!! Im assumung this is normal and it is similar to us being pregnant..... Does anyone have any tips with what to expect as her pregnancy progresses???!!!!:)

Hi,

Good luck.

Get yourself into the 'Breeding' forum, loads of very knowledgable, experienced and generally helpful people in there.:)

They will also be able to suggest books that you may find helpful too.

Maybe try reading a book about it? Though the smart thing would have been to do this before you got your mare knocked up. I hope you're lucky enough not to end up with any of the many many issues that can arise when breeding. I prefer to leave it up to the experts, to many risks that mare and/or foal don't survive for me to risk my girl.

Not the most constructive comment from Silverspring there! I have my mare's first foal due in June, and can't wait. Head over to the Breeding forum as there are loads of knowledgable (sp) peeps on there. Make sure you post some piccies once the foal is born!!!!!!!!!!!!

What sort of constructive comment can you make to someone who doesn't have a clue about breeding and has a foal due in a couple of months?!

It's a real hate of mine that people can just roll up to a stud, pay their money and expect a second horse to pop out a couple of month later doubling the value of the first horse. Look mum BUY ONE GET ONE FREE FOR A SMALL STUD FEE!

Oh wait, there's various complications that could kill mare or foal, genetic diseases, bad confimration, bad temprament etc etc...but clearly this was all taken into consideration by the person selling the stallions services...not the mare owners problem, no need to read a book before deciding to breed!

First you need to decide if you are going to foal her down at home or send her away to stud.

If you don't know, I suggest you speak to your vet about the pros and cons pretty pronto.

Buy yourself a good book and start to learn quickly.

PM me if you want some more help.

As has been said, although most pregnancies and foalings go very smoothly things can go horribly wrong very quickly.

Hello, I had a great deal of pleasure from breeding a couple of foals at home. My last was my beautiful Highland bred from a nice mare who had given a lot of pleasure as a ridden pony. She has good temperament and conformation.

Near to foaling I brought her in at night (it was April) and on the day he actually arrived she tried to tell me that she didn't want to go out. I put her out for a couple of hours though. That evening our foal arrived, about 5 mins before I went out to check her for the night. He was two weeks early but absolutely fine, as was she. They had no problems at all and I would love to do it all again but neither I or the world needs another pony at present.
Good luck with yours I'm sure you will all be fine once you make some plans for the coming event.

Oh FGS! She's asking now isn't she?

Oh, I forgot, you live on Cloud "I'm just perfect"

Comments like yours really hack me off.

I've never done it so not very helpful, but I wouldn't plunge into it blind and without knowing what the hell i was getting myself into!

I know sashpip on here lost a foal about 8 weeks before it was due and the mare a couple of days after, so i can only strongly suggest buying loads of books and start swotting or harassing the vet for a bit info!!

In the meantime, good luck!

Thanks to everyone who helped its much appreciated...

However, i posted this comment as i thought the idea of the forum is to ask for more knowledgable people's advice! I have read books but have learnt that in the past you learn more from everyone else's experiences as I am new to breeding!

Thanks again

Get yourself down to the breeding forum, we're all very nice in there, unlike some!!
