... but wouldn't own?

I am far too smitten with GSDs to seriously consider other breeds (although have the border collies too and they will always be around for work) but admire lots of dogs breeds I know I will never own.

Belgian Malinois
Dutch Herder
Kelpie
Working cocker and springer spaniels
Working Lab
Old style Rough Collie (quite like the Smooths too)
GWP
Czechoslovakian Wolf Dog

I have realised that having 2 malamutes makes getting away with or to friends a bit difficult as most people who might be happy with you bringing a spaniel / lab type dog are a bit less welcoming of such big hairy things, so as much as I love this breed I might take a break from them after these 2. I definitely have a type though as I also love bernese mountain dogs, newfoundlands, chows, samoyeds, leonbergers and many other spitz breeds but OH has ruled all of these out for the same reason as the malamutes.

I am pretty anti-social so that's not a problem for me LOL! Are you ever discriminated against in holiday cottages or hotels for having such large, hairy dogs? I would hope not but have been asked in the past what breeds of dog I own before booking a cottage.

So what breed would you have next do you think?

All is the above are dogs I admire but wouldn’t own one ever!

As you all know, I am a breed slut ;)

I love Borzois, my first boss had one-jeepers he was quick! not sure a borzoi would be sheep-country friendly though, he was a very sweet dog. I do love deerhounds and Irish Wolfhounds but the latter just dont live long enough, so maybe a great big shaggy lurcher-but then, sheep. I also love Afghans-I do like a long haired dog.

I love the rough collies too but would want to do some research into temperament, smooth breeders tell me they are quite different-but havent told me how :D

I still hanker after a beagle tbh and when I am really too old to be running with dogs I may go for Cavaliers or standard Dachs.

I still think setters are the most beautiful of dogs but can't see me having any more-also like the wire haired Vizlas.

saying all that, I do own the two most handsome dogs in the world so maybe I'll stick with them-nothing quite like a retrievers face to cheer me up and the other one looks regal, until he falls off the couch.

Yes, we've often looked at dog friendly cottages and then found that they don't include ours so have to do lots of ringing around rather than just booking online. I'm currently thinking beagle as next dog but not sure it's fair to have just 1, OH I think wants a dog free spell (he's self employed now and finding he has lots of freedom and flexibility plus spare cash so wants to get away more etc)

Just curious, why no to all of these breeds?
I live in a little house with an aversion to housework 😂

There’s a Samoyed near me. He’s a beautiful and lovely dog, but can you imagine taking it to the yard?! It’d look worse than my fleece jacket at the end of the day 😂

Are borzois/lurchers never sheep friendly, even with training?

I am friends with a girl who uses two rough collies to herd sheep and they are actually really impressive for the breed. I couldn't see them ever taking over from borders but hers are really something to behold. She has told me there should be a litter of pups by her older male in the summer and I am so tempted but not sure I could cope with the coat (hers live in kennels) and not really fair to have another pup so soon when my GSD is only six months. I wouldn't be able to do them both justice. Maybe in future though, who knows.

I do love Irish Setters and think that is because of a wonderful red I knew as a kid. I could possibly be persuaded by a working golden retriever as well as a working lab - beautiful dogs.

I can definitely see the attraction in the deerhounds and wolfhounds. Borzoi always look a bit odd to me.
As a teenager I had a part time job walking two borzoi. I had access to a well fenced field so I could let them off to run which the owner rarely did. They were lovely dogs but always hairs everywhere.

tbh re sheep and Borzois I have no idea, there's too few around-the one I knew was nowhere near any sheep but I've rarely seen anything as quick and as able to jump. My place is literally in the middle of a massive field surrounded by lambs right now, later cattle (I own a strip in the middle) so I am uninclined to try something that would have a high prey drive and am half joking about beagles and dachs given the amount of badgers we have.

Kelpie. I would love a kelpie again.
English setter.
Shar pei, I love the look of them. (Or did, before they got hugely over wrinkled).

GSD and Red Setters. Have had both in the past but will never have them again due to the size of my hobbit hole. Sister has a Cocker and I wouldn't have one of those either.

Would love a miniature Schnauzer or a true Parsons Jack Russell.

Chocolate Labs - do ALL Labs smell? Don't think I've ever met one that didn't.

Golden Retriever - too much hair.

I think my next dog will be another Staffy or a Dachshund.

Wolfhounds or deerhounds, I'm short (and weak) that even with training I think I'd still be arse over tit half the time... and the short life expectancy of the big breeds is a no no as well. I love German Shepherds as well, but couldn't do justice to them re training etc.

I love the look of beagles but every one I've met has been an utter pain in the ass, although I suspect that is human error

I would love a shar pei too but there skin produces this oil that really sets off my eczema, I would also love to rescue a staffy, you see so many needing homes it's so sad!! I just couldn't adopt a dog that has the potential to be so dangerous without knowing its history :(

Afghan hound for sure. Gorgeous. But I couldn't care for that coat.

Husky. Again just think they're stunning but too hard work for me.

Malinois and working line GSD. I don't think I'm good enough at training to own them but would love to be and they are such smart looking dogs as well as clever.

Daft scruffy spaniel mutts are my limit.

Good question...

GSDs - I've never met one that I didn't think was fabulous, but I couldn't deal with all that hair

Dogue de Bordeaux - lovely temperaments but too big and too slobbery for me

Great Dane - as above

Greyhounds/wippets - I think they're beautiful but couldn't deal with the thievery

Bearded collie - so much fun, just as long as I can hand them back to the owner after a few hours

deerhound, my absolute favourite dog lost mine at nearly 10 years old, much too soon..........whippet, lurchers, red setter, border collie, border terrier, as all black gsd,

Afghan hound for sure. Gorgeous. But I couldn't care for that coat.

I’ve got a GSD x Mali. Always owned lurchers, whippets & terriers. I loved them all & have got wonderful memories, but my new girl is on a different scale & I love it. Easily trainable, people orientated & daft as a brush. She has been an absolute joy.

I think Afghan hounds are beautiful. Probably not ideal first dogs though and far too big with too much hair to ever have one really!
I'd really like a poodle but OH is in the camp of 'they're girls dogs' so until such a time where two dogs is possible so he can have his staffy too I think that's out.

I am a GSD person through and through.
I am limited to two though and have to have two matchy shepherds which leaves no room for number 3. I couldn’t have a shep and a second breed as they wouldn’t ‘go’ 😄

I love leonbergers and would go for one of those if I could have hypothetical number 3 however the short lifespan puts me off.

Oh and corgis, love the look of those too!

GSDs, but only the type like Mooblis Zak, and Malinois. And I always admire working border collies, I have a show line who I adore and is perfect for the life we have but the work ethic of a proper border collie is something else.
