Hi,
I saw some time ag there was a thread about Bremond College in Coventry. I tried to join it but can't seem to.
I was interested because my great aunt was the Headmistress (Madam) who was a rather intimidating character and my great uncle was Theoph Marash who we all loved.
We used to come and stay at Bremond College (The Manor) there and help much out the stables and ride there. I remember some of the horses mentioned in one of the posts from 2011-12.
So I was interested in people's memories.
My aunt was a formidable character who was fluent in several languages and had learnt to ride at the Spanish School of Riding in Austria. we were all other scared of her. Both my grandfather and her other sister Gladys were formidable in their own way.
so if any of you remember it do share your memories whether you were at school there to learnt to ride, maybe on the Lipizzaners.

BREMOND COLLEGE

Hi Rachel,
I saw your post and wanted to reply. I was a working pupil in the stables at Bremond College, about 1968. It was my first job when I left school.
There were 3 of us at the time, Sue who’d worked with horses before, Susan and myself who were straight out of school.
The horses I remember at the time were Nautika, Erga the Lippizaners, Sunset a Shetland pony, Mushka, Wanda, Giovanni who was quite scatty. Ponies Copper and Joe I think? I can remember going down to Wembley to see the Spanish Riding School and I think some of them came to see your aunt.
Wendy Walker was in charge of the stables and as you say your aunt was a formidable lady! We had our meals with the girls in the school and the food was awful. There was a young couple who lived in a house in the grounds Sheila and Gary, they worked in the school and gardens. One evening us girls went over to chat to them and Sir caught us there we got in so much trouble!
We lived in the huts in the stable grounds and they were freezing cold! It was really hard work, we had to check the horses about 10pm before we went to bed and only had one day off a week.
I started about August and left just before Christmas because I had chicken pox. I was ill for quite a time so I didn’t go back but I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. I have the letter somewhere offering me the job and if I can find it I’ll post a copy on here. Happy times! Best wishes Jean

Dear Rachel
I found your post by accident just now and joined the forum especially to say Hello. I went to Bremond between 1974-1981. My parents sent me to Bremond because they knew the Bass/Marash family. I asked my elderly father this morning and he says he remembers Gladys. If you want to chat I’d be fascinated to hear from you. My number is 07385563571. Wishing you all the best of the season. Hi Rachel

I was at Bremond in the early 70s. It occurred to me the other day that I know nothing about the history of the school. For instance, when was it formed? What brought it about? How did they choose the location? Were there always horses there? What was the history of Madam and Sir before they started the school? All stuff you never think about when you are in your early teens!

If you know the answers to these questions or have any further information, I'm sure others would find it interesting as well. It's only as you get older that you start to think about your teachers as people who had lives before you ever knew them. I'm sure there's a fascinating back history in there!

Thank you
Leigh Hunt

Hello
I went to Bremond around 1957 to 1964. Not the happiest of times. I was only sent there as the school was almost opposite where I lived with my divorced mother and grandparents. M
rs Marash seemed to have it in for me, luckily Sir was completely different and I think felt sorry for me. I remember Madam's horse Pluto Edgar, which was a reject from the Spanish Riding School. I remember one year we had to take messages home to ask for a contribution to Pluto Edgar's birthday party! My grandfather who was a self-made man said he paid fees and he wasn't going to pay for a birthday party for a horse! Once again I was in trouble for not bringing a contribution! The next thing was contributions for a swimming pool, again I went back empty handed. I was so pleased when my grandparents retired and went down to Poole, and placed mother and I nearer to grandparent's factory (where mother was a book keeper) in Exhall, Coventry. I did find then how behind I was with the basics, and had to work very hard to get into the grammar part of the school. (I had to attend a comprehensive as Bremond did not have the 12 plus exam set up, which was the exam that tested your ability to see whether you could make grammar school or not). The one good memory I have was that my favourite singer in the pop group The Hollies, Alan Clarke, married in a church just down the road, so I sneaked out to get a peek!
