Just had some delivered - wondering how much to feed? I have one of the standard little scoops that you get with a lot of the supplements so how many of those per day?

Thanks

i feed 25g a day - thats to a 500kg horse - the 25ml scoops is 12g (i used weighing scales!) so i feed two of those a day.

ps
where you get your brewers yeast from and how much was it?

Brill, thanks v much!

I'm an idiot - In my excitiment I just ripped open the bag to have a good old sniff, didn't look at my receipt which actually had feeding instructions on the back!

I got 2 kilos for £7 although postage was £9! From a company called Nettex Supplies

If you are looking for cheaper Brewers Yeast next time, Charnwood milling do it in 25kg sacks
I paid £50 including postage, works out £2 per kilo ;-)

I feed big horses 50g a day instead of any balancer/multivit/supplement (except magnesium oxide and glucosamine, which I add). It does their feet a lot of good and also seems to reduce flies, I haven't used a spray all year this year. Most barefooters seem to feed about 50g a day. I second Charnwood, I'm waiting for my delivery now. Usually comes in about 2 days. I share delivery with friends and that's even cheaper.

Thanks foxy1 - will order from them next time.

Cp - he has sweetitch, allbeit pretty mildly. This is the main reason I bought it but glad to hear it will be of benefit to his feet too as he is barefoot - how does it benefit the feet?

It's full of biotin and other b-vits, plus chromium (apparently difficult to source naturally elsewhere) and lots of other "stuff" (technical term :) ) that seems to be more easily taken in by the horse because it's not man-made chemicals like they are in balancers. I don't know why that should be, as technically the chemicals are identical, but lots of us have seen benefits in BY when swapping off commercial balancers/vit&min supplements.

One of my boys kept his concavity this summer after a year on it, when he normally loses it on summer grass. None of the three I have were bitten by horse flies, they would sometimes land but not bite. And my shetland and hunter, who I used to use benzyl benzoate on to stop them rubbing their tails did not have any this year and not one rub.

I have a friend close by and her 4 horses did exactly the same as mine when they went on it, grew thicker horn (and tail in one case!), minor sand crack in her youngster disappeared and some terrible cracks in her brood mare's feet just healed right up, and they had been right to the coronet and oozing at the coronet.

It's 10p a day bought in bulk, much cheaper than any other balancer. And it smells like marmite - I love it :)

ps For completeness, it's not a complete vit and min mix, and some people add seaweed and linseed for iodine, iron and lysine (and other things too I'm sure, but I'm no expert). I don't use those and neither do most people I know. I also buy my magnesium oxide as calmag from an agricultural merchant for £9 for 25 kilos - £3.50 a year per horse!

Thank you for that info, very interesting :)

He actually has great feet, something I am very glad about and eager to maintain! I will let you know how we get on re the flies but at the moment he appears to be a very mild sufferer but if I can combat it completely by feeding this then happy days.

Oh and I LOVE Marmite, had my head stuck in the bag for 5 mins, haha!

I feed seaweed and linseed meal too - but didnt get my brewers yeast from charnwood as 25kg is just too big - if anyone knows anywhere cheap but with sensible size say 5kg? without huge postage!!!!!! lol

also can you get it direct from a brewery???? i only ask as i am a pub manager! and obviously I should be able to speak to someone at head office in brewing if its ok to use.
