Bridgend Suicides

Very sad, feel very sorry for the parents, but I'm sorry, how can you blame 'the media' for a child/teenager choosing to commit suicide, and imply that they 'did not understand the consequences'?
Once again, no acceptance of parental responsibility.
Whose job is it to ensure that things are ok with a child, and that they understand the consequences of [attempted] suicide? The BBC?

in general I don't think anyone is to blame for suicide. You cannot know what is going on inside someones head. My best friend was killed on my 15th birthday and I came so close to killing myself two months later because I missed him so much, I couldn't imagine my life without him in it. I went as far as slashing my wrists. I was found by the man who is now my father in law, he patched me up, got me stitched up and talked and talked and listened to me. He spoke to my doctor (my mother just tried to have me sectioned) and between him and my doctor I came through. But if it hadn't been for him...
People knew I was unhappy but no-one knew the depth of what I was feeling. No-one was to blame. It is so hard being a teenager if you have lost some-one close to you and it is easy to give up.

i haven't seen any of the reports on t.v., but if they really said that the teenagers "did not understand the consequences", then you must question the I.Q. of the reporter.

Being from Bridgend and knowing personally quite a few of the people involved I would say a lot are due to a drugs/alcohol factor. Also take into consideration Bridgend is (IMO) the back of beyond with nothing going on here, nothing good, very little for youngsters to do apart from getting involved in the wrong things.

I dont know how true it is but how awfully sad if so. Whilst not being the reason, it could push an unstable teen over the edge - the promise of 'fame'...

I cannot accept that teenagers are commiting suicide because of the media coverage ot other teenage suicides. If someone kills themself, it is for their own reasons, not because they read about others doing it.

The most useful thing that the media can do is to show the effect that a suicide has on those left behind. If that does not deter others from doing it, nothing will.

I can totally understand that high level of emotion. I think mid-teens is when your emotions are at their highest, and it is easy to forget how big an impact even everyday problems can have. The death of a friend can really seem an insurmountable problem, as can the break-up of a relationship. Fine time to have exams!

Yesterday I went to the funeral of a friends son. He was 17 and was found hanged last week. He was the second young man I know to have killed himself in the last year. Heartbreaking for everyone involved.
I hope that the coverage in the media of the brigdend suicides will show the devastating effect suicide has on those left behind and will make teenagers think again and seek out help.
I also hope that it will make the government realise that the current support systems in place for teenagers who are having difficulties is completely inadequate. I am sure that the two boys I knew would still be here had they had someone to turn to and been given the necessary support.

Re not understanding the consequences, a lot of young people do not understand the concept of dead being dead and permenant, they also believe themselves to be imortal. Teenage suicide attempts are often of the "see what you made me do" variety, it is often difficult to know if completed suicides were intended to be completed or if there is a wish for the last minute rescue which would prove that people care for them, know and understand their thought processes. With any suicide attempt it is very difficult to work out the mindset of the person at the time of the act, particularly if the suicide is completed and they are not around to discuss it with.
