We had a really mixed hack this morning, some nice sections but I had to get off twice to do gates. Once because the latch on a 6ft high deer gate was about 3ft off the ground and on the opposite side to me requiring me to put my hand through a narrow gap between the gate and the gate post, reach round and undo it on the far side. I had just got back on and gone about 200m when we reached another gate which had dropped on its hinges and so needed to be lifted with two hands so I got off again.

All the faffing this caused kind of took the edge off our hack and I would normally just moan but leave it. Today I'm not at work so I thought I would ring the council. When I didn't get a reply I left a message and thought "Oh well, at least I tried". A coupld of hours later I was rung back. The nice man said that he will try and sort the catches on the two gates within a month! I decided then that I was on a roll so I asked him if there was any chance he could make a new piece of bridleway along the edge of a wood where there is a lovely path that we could ride along, and so link up two existing bridleways and mean that we can avoid riding on the main A road. He said that he thought it was an excellent idea! He can't promise anything but said it was just the sort of project he wanted to be doing, thought we would have a very good chance of getting it sorted and he only wished more people would ring him up and make suggestions!

As I scraped myself up off the floor in shock I volunteered my services to collate the views of riders from the three livery yards in our village on local bridleways. He's really keen to create lots more bridleways in our area because he thinks its far too dangerous for us to be riding on the roads.

A self indulgent post really but I wanted to share so that I could encourage other people who have thought about contacting the council but have never got round to it. He was really keen and couldn't have been more helpful
