in our village a lane leads to a bridleway which goes over 3 lines of intercity fast trains this is going to be closed for bridge repairs, is there any set height that the sides of the bridge have to be? they have told me they are going to be 1.3m but would like to know if they should be higher, also no signs saying bridleway to be shut for 2 months but told our agent our quad would have to fly to get to our land/sheep other side! so think bridleway will be unuseable!

Also speak to your Rights Of Way Officer at the County Hall. He should be aware of the work being done and can let you know about the legal position and intervene if there is a problem. My local RoW guy is ace.

Done BHS and council, council haven't been informed of any closure, but railworkers putting walkboards over railway footpath but no diversion signs yet, they have asked us to keep them informed, no way would I cross 3 lines of track although it is a footpath. would like to get bridge sides as high as poss so spooky horse wouldnt throw rider on to tracks. trains regular and fast.

Last year they did some work to the bridleway behind my house, which is a disused railway line, and has several bridges over roads etc. The bridge sides were very low and we had to dismount to cross it, but they put up a new high fence so it is now safe to ride over. It is in a National Park and they might have different rules but there could possibly be a new health and safety type rule on minimum height, otherwise why would they have bothered to do ours?
Come to think of it they have done a few round here in the same way so it may be there is new legislation - I don;t know how you could find out though.

how high are the sides now? this is a very busy line with diesel trains travelling at fast speeds what winds them up is the 2nd whoosh of rear of train going under bridge, and often dont realise train is coming until committed to going over.

There are standard recognised parapet heights for bridleway/byway bridges or bridges used by horse riders/carriage drivers.
The standard that is used for all bridges is called BD52/93 which was published in April 1993.
The parapets on Bridleway bridges must be no less than 1.8 metre high with an 18" solid infillbut.
The bHS produce a leaflet on this subject. Contact their access dpeartment for a copy.

Thats interesting PeterNatt. There are three railway bridges on roads that we ride over, the old stone walls are very low, probably less than 130cm.

Thanks to BHS and local paper network rail are making a rail to go on top of 150cm solid sides, so I was told yesterday if it is true credit where credit is due, thanks
