Fao of anyone who has been to sales recently, what's the trade like?

We are trying to decide whether worth going to sale on Friday - friend's budget is now only £400 max and it's a 2 hour journey each way at least with trailer on so early start and we need to be back home 5pm latest...

Therefore... what's the chance of picking up a yearling or 2yo part bred to make 15.2hh min for £400 or less?

Other thing we could do is go in car and if she buys anything hopefully sort out transport from there - anyone do this successfully? Or has anyone left a youngster there overnight and picked up early next morning - do they get checked late on?

Many thanks for any replies

I would have thought you should get somthing, the only thing I would say is normally the higher end of the foals go to this sale.

Trade hs not been good at the hay on wye sales and breacon with Section a's as low as £30 for foals and sections c's making a couple of hundred quid. At the New forest sales the foals were making around the £40 mark.

I went the (festival of the horse) malvern sales, The trade I thought was still good, though sellers still had quite high reserves so there was quite a bit that didn't sell. I don't have any knowledge on prices for welsh's.
Transport can be difficult to sort out, as u've got to hope that someone from ur area was going and had space to take anything u brought home. So if ur friends really keen to get something i'd take ur trailer.
Havn't ever kept anything over nite that iv'e brought so again don't know much but can't imagine they get checked ( but i'm only guesing).

Hi from friends who went to Fayre Oaks its def a buyers Market.
Ive PM'd you the full marked catalogue so you can do a bit of re search!! It should give you an idea of the type you are looking for and how much they went for.

Thanks for replies everyone - sounds like she might get something for her money so not a wasted journey - we just pushed for time and hate rushing with trailer on.

Have text a couple of friends to see if they know what dealers/transporters are going from our way. Will also ring Brightwells and see about stabling overnight - a friend did this once but pony was older and had no problems being left alone.

Just wondering how popular (or hopefully unpopular) the bigger part-breds would be at this sale?

We went to Malvern too, friend bought a lovely chap for a good price but thought some of the reserves were too high too.

Keltic - thanks for PM - will reply

Generally, prices of youngstock are low in local sales, but up in builth wells(dont get me wrong, theres always a chance) but i hardly doubt owners will put a reserve lower than 400 for a yearling /2yo of (15.2hh)..i think its the height...perhaps a youngster of 13.2/14.2 will perhaps sell under 400. However from my experiance at builth wells every season, i dont think "many" good quality youngstock will have a reserve under 400 at 15.2hh.

Thanks for reply, understand totally what you saying, prob cost them more in stud fees!

At this moment in time we still going and taking trailer - but knowing us we will change our mind 50 times before then..

you may get something prices have been down at sales this year. i would go to brecon with that budget TBH if you can look through the rough many bargains to be had there, although that said, a freind of mine pickedup a decent cob for £300 last year. depends if what you want every one else wants!!

take a trailer/lorry, you will struggle to get transport...everything must leave the saleyard on the day.

for yor budget, you should get something nice...why a part-bred though?
you'd get a reg. pony for that.

don't buy anything you feel sorry for.

as lillym says..if you want a real bargain, try to get to Brecon..i've bought several there...

Having looked at the past sales records, i'm not sure you'd get something that is likely to mature to 15.2 with a budget of £400. My filly was sold at Builwith sales as rising 2 year old and fetched £1600 she is a nice colour but no the true action of a D so not really highly sought after as a brood mare! However as you say the current climate is poor so you may be lucky and if your not looking for something that everyone else is looking at you may get lucky
I wanted to go down myself but as i'm a sucker for a kind eye would end up with a wagon full of baby d's

Decision made - we are taking trailer

Friend wants to buy a part-bred - she loves welsh but wanted something a bit bigger and maybe more of a sportshorse? I would prefer something registered so you could do a bit of showing too. What would generally fetch more - a bigger part-bred or a registered 14.2?

When is Brecon sales?

However, with her budget she hasn't got much of a choice lol. She is small enough to back a sec a - that might be plan b
