Not as amazing as some (meardsall_millie, I’m looking at you!), and to a lot of people they'll think we're a bit bonkers celebrating it. But Reggie is amazing, and today laid a lot of good foundations.

In the dressage, he warmed up sweetly and did a nice and obedient test. He’s just not established enough for PC intermediate really, so although it was good it wasn’t there really. He got 41.2, and the judge echoed exactly what Al said when she came out of the arena- he needs more practise and experience but his paces are now very correct and true, and it was a sweet test.

Onto the SJ, and it had jump4joy fences with the XC courses running round it… Reg is not known for his SJ prowess, and his inexperience showed. The course was tight and twisty, and he hadn’t had a good warm up (he stopped several times due to having no confidence in the greasy ground- it was lovely elsewhere, but not up there). We watched a few rounds, and people were clocking up some big scores! He was very argumentative all the way round, so Al gave him nothing to argue against and just gently wagonned him round. Finding that he was being allowed to jump off any stride he fancied he threw some interesting shapes, but he tried very hard to leave them all up until the final two, where he lost balance round the tight turn and had no room to sort himself out. I’m sure a lot of people would say she should have done more, but he was arguing and so she just kept reassuring him with her voice and gently keeping her leg on and let him make his own mistakes. 8 faults was ok for the class, and amazing for him! After the SJ he was in contention if he went clear XC.

Finally XC! He hasn’t been for 3 months and this course was, on the whole, whack up to height with lots and lots of questions. A half coffin in a dark dell, a big corner shortly after a big steeplechase fence (a theme emerges?), a solid style round a tight corner to a huge trakhener, an elephant trap with a big drop to 3 steps up then 2 strides to a pimple fence, another big long then 2 strides to a step into water... There were a lot of questions and it was only Reg's second run at that height. There were a lot of learner fences though so it was a nice course overall :)

(the best XC course photos- I have the full Int course though if anyone wants it?)

Plan was to have a go at each big question, but if he said no to go round and do the learner. Reg is not a horse who takes saying no lightly if he’s ridden unless he really doesn’t get the question and bullying him over in a comp is not going to do anything other than scare him. Better to let him have fun and make/ find similar questions to school over was Al’s decision and we would have agreed had we not been too scared to talk!

He warmed up confidently and set off with his ears so pricked they were pretty much 3 fences in front at all times! He did the first 3 nicely, and then disappeared into the dell to the first big question.

Al says he came back really nicely and then popped the rails and although he goggled at the ditch he jumped without breaking stride. He pinged the skinny log and came back into view over a big steeplechase fence. After he landed, Al brought him right back very very early for the corner, as everyone she’d watched who’d had a run out hadn’t set up enough and he is very iffy over corners. He started being a bit arsey at first, but settled into a bouncy canter and popped the corner very well. In the video you can hear a woop- that’s me being stupidly excited!

(Fences 1, 2, 6, 7, 15, 16, 17!)

Carried on over some let up fences (big but simple) to the trakehner- Al walked it as 4 strides off the corner, but his XC canter is very big, so it turned out to be a short 3. He popped beautifully over it, despite being rather close- it looks diddy in the photo but it is maximum dimensions! Kept going really well over the next 2 to the elephant trap. It was a fairly innocuous fence but caused lots of problems- it was going into darkness with a big drop and it looked like you were jumping into trees. Al is very cross with herself over this, but she didn’t ride it with enough conviction as she was thinking of the next jump (three steps up to a pimple fence) so he stopped to make sure it was safe. It was, so he jumped well the second time and flew up the three steps. Because of the stop, Al decided to not do the pimple but take him round to the learner fence- she felt he’d have done the pimple, and if they’d been clear she’d have pushed him for it but the round was about him being confident, and that was a big ask for him. She got lots of praise from the commentary for her decision which made us all very :D :D :D

Pinged the narrow gate, and trotted into the palisade with the steep hill afterwards and just hopped down before spotting the log and he went for it! Al started to tell him to steady, but he was being a bit arrogant and ignored her… Saw the reason why she’d said steady so chipped in a little one and then hopped down the step afterwards neatly. Flew the final brush for the best round he’d ever done.

On paper, this was a bad day. 41.2 dressage, 8 SJ and 35 XC doesn’t sound pretty. But he tried his absolute hardest all day and she was complimented on the way she rode by several people who she respects a lot. The foundations for the future have started to be laid very securely- if she can keep him like that XC, he is going to be awesome. He says yes but is sensible, takes fliers but will chip in and on the whole listens to her and assesses his situation very quickly.

Plus, we love the donkey. All the money in the world could not make us part with him :D

Very well done to Al and Reg!! (Is that Al in the shorts in the photos? - if so I saw her walking around and would have said hello if I'd realised!! :o)

Both the SJ and XC asked plenty of questions for this level and required thoughtful, tactful riding, rather than being gung-ho (as you rightly noted with your comments about the corner, etc), so you should be very proud of both of them for making such a good job of it. :D

Onwards and upwards - where next?

Sounds like a fab day and he looks great in the pictures. He makes them fences look so easy :). Where are you next? Are they doing the pc areas?

Thank you :) Yes, that's her sporting the short shorts. Next is PC eventing areas at Isleham- not expecting much because the standard is going to be very high this year. One team who'll be competing all have horses who've done 2* in the past 2 years... :O But it looks more achievable as a course than before :D

measles- thank you :) He's quite correct in his way of going, but there is still some tension and a bit quarters in in canter, which the judge penalised him for quite heavily. He loves his work, and is a real trier but does lack experience which shows on occasion!

angelish- quietly looking forward to the next few months as they grow as a partnership and get more experience. Everyone loves Reg- he has a fan club going on back home!

dafthoss- yes. It'll be a big question, but just another experience run I think. He might do a BE100 after in August as a bit of a let up- PC run huge tracks round here, whereas the BE100s are more strictly governed. But it depends on his SJ and flatwork, but hopefully it's slowly coming together. Will you be there? It's your PC hosting I think?

mm1987- think it'll take a few more runs to get more in the confidence bank, but I really hope it all comes together. She's slogged it on him, and the transformation in only 19 months is truly gobsmacking.

Fab! thats brilliant :) I kept hearing alice Graham and Somethings Up keep popping up on the commentary and the amount of praise she was given:) He looked rather emence on the course and unstopable!

The Int caused loads of problems! I was down at the start with the DC's wife and we only saw about 2 clears come home! So another massive welldone! :D :D
And it was nice to see you even if it was brief and panicky ;) :o hehee

Yes it is being hosted by them (I feel a bit wierd calling them ours as we only joined this year and I dont really know many people :o). I a going to try get there and watch if I'm not competing else where. I will have to come say hello to the gorgous reg :).

Unintentional bump, lol!

Thank you LBW, especially for the photos you got :) Her section was insane- if she'd only had the stop, or only taken the learner she might have been placed?! Mad! He is a superstar and days like that make all the times it's not been particularly fun very worthwhile!

Managed to miss this somehow but I have to say Reg is a bit of an eyeful - he's just luvverly. Very well done to him and Alice and the whole Reg team :).
We'll be at Isleham with Frodo - would be lovely to put a face to a name if we get a chance. Are you doing Calvert Cup next weekend?

Not doing Calvert Cup (hopefully next year though!) because it's going to be just a bit too much for him right now. Good luck to Rosie there! When we get the times I'll drop you a PM- is Frodo strutting his stuff there? He and Reg can commiserate over how much they hate the stressage!

TD- idd! And they really were which is nice- usually when he has a 'learning experience', the lesson is along the lines of "If you pretend you've never been ridden before, you'll be left in the lorry park!"... I don't know how you cope when T rides, because I'm a nervous wreck and the jumps are smaller and the horse is bigger!

Well Done, saw her from round the first field, she rode him really well! It was a tough course, the ex PT pony in our pc got eliminated at the elephant trap. Your Trakenha photo is small? Ours was taken from the side and looks huge :P

I was trying to avoid looking at it side on because it was too scary :D The pro photo doesn't help, as he's making it look quite small! It was a big old course :) How did you get on? Thank you- she was determined that he wasn't having any stops due to poor riding or lack of conviction!

nmt- I agree totally! I was so scared, really need to man up as usually I'm good at being jolly and positive and I was struggling a bit!

Nice report for what seemed to be a great day out. It's nice to read the progress and thought that went on for the day. Even if it "wasn't great on paper" it's got to be such a good experience for your horse. Love the scary jumping pics!

Well done Al and Reg! When everything comes together they are going to be such a good team :)

Was the SJ on a surface in the end? If Wibbles hadn't have had his accident I'dve took him for the novice, but having seen some of the fences (a lot of my PC went so have seen some of the 'omg, this fence is massive' coursewalking photos!) I am pretty grateful that I didn't

The SJ is always on a surface. we get to use the burghley HT arena :D :Dhehee.

LoLo, thats alright :) there not very good quality as they we're taken by my phone but they wern't ovely bad :o

Yes, even if she had taken an 'L' which incures 15 pens she would probably have still been in contention!!! We had a girl from the Burghley take 2 'L's and still get placed!! Mad! Atleast it wasn't a DR comp though!

Me for the facebook page please :)

Well done to them both - those fences are huuuge!!

Don't suppose any of your PC friends have full course photos? If so could you please ask them to email them to xcpics@hotmail.co.uk or if they're already on facebook, send me a link for www.facebook.com/unaffiliatedxccoursephotos ?

Thanks :)

BW, I am very jealous! Would be nice to ride round the burghley arena, needn't mention it was only for PC :p

I don't think they have the full course - most of the photos are of them standing behind a big brush and stuff like that, looking scared! I can ask them :)

I was looking at some BE results recently and 1st/2nd place had 8 and 12 SJ faults but clear XC after that everyone placed had at least 20pens on the XC!!!

I think Lolo has the full intermediate course :)

duckling- I'm currently uploading the full intermediate (1m) course onto fb for you, but it's taking a while!

Thanks for all your lovely comments- Reg (aka Donkeyface, following some rather unflattering stills for the SJ!) is going to have a massive ego soon! Luckily, the little coloured cobs he is fieldmates with keep him under control! As well as the pheasant who is currently eating his tea for him each night...

BN- yep, it was on a surface, used jump4joy fences and was SO tight. It rewarded nippy ponies and well-balanced, careful horses... They'll get there! The novice course, barring one fence, was really lovely and had some really nice learners too. The massive brush looked really innocuous on takeoff and had a massive drop- some brilliant photos from it!

Sorry for the unintentional bump, but you've all said such nice things I hate not saying thank you.
