My youngster has been backed since March, been home since April, hes been going great, so pleased with him! until a week and a half ago!

We are on a private yard, just me and my horses, so no one to ride with! my mare is retired, shes 29 and only retried for the last yr and a half, one little thing after the other, and now I feel I'm too heavy for her! other than a large knee she is totally fine, she's not lame on the knee or anything but does have arthritis, which she's not on bute for yet, as its not required!

so based on the following storey, I'm wondering if it would make sense to get my light weigh friend to ride her, as a confident giver, and because he knows her, he's not going to feel the need to stop, sniff and make friends with her! What do you think......

story; I rode the boy last week and he learnt to plant himself when we got to a field full of horses! and each ride since he's planted unless he's going in the direction of this horsey field! then in my lesson at weekend he was a nightmare, it was a challenge just getting a walk!

so today I arranged to ride with a girl from my village, but she couldn't make it, so sent her young sharer, spoke to the girls mum and she promised her daughter was confident to ride out and the horse was sensible (as my boy has only been out in company twice) her mum was to cycle with her, later she said another 14yr old would cycle instead! so, i got ready and up on him. they went to the wrong farm so were 25 mins late! when we met they'd both ridden horses, which we followed fine, but was warned that the mare might kick!

anyway half way up the lane, the farmers dad came down in his tractor, rather than pulling over in the widest place, he kept coming, so we had to turn around, fine, until the "kicker" was behind us, panicked, bolted forward, my boy then panicked and reversed backwards at 100mph! the farmer just carried on coming, so I ended up getting off as I didn't feel safe (boy is a known rearer and 16'2, so didn't want to fall off) he was totally panicked, I ended up being pushed in to nettles, so I sent the girls off on their own and let him cool down for 5 mins! and I just rode him to the end of the lane and back!

sorry for the long story, I'm just feeling really C R A P tonight!!

It sounds as if you need to do something before things get even worse, going out with unreliable or otherwise unsuitable escorts is no help in your situation, bringing her into some steady hacking should do no harm, you will be in control of how much she does so if she seems to struggle you can turn round early or give up if she really doesn't cope, as long as your friend is happy with the arrangement I would give it a go.

yeh its becoming a right pain and he's been sooo confident up until now! so I don't want him to lose his confidence! my friend has offered to ride with me! and I will make sure its only once a week but just to make it a bit more interesting for him!!

From Aug I have a new woman renting another part of my yard and she has 3 older horses, which are all very quiet and sensible, so will have her to ride with from then but don't want to wait another month or so!!

If you can get your old girl out to give him a lead, do it.
It's a great solution if she's a confidence giver. Horses like that are invaluable for teaching youngsters that it's ok.

Hiya, how awful for you.
I'm just bring my boy back in to work. He's 22 and had a few years off after major colic surgery and tendon problems. He hadn't done much for years apart from trotting the kids around.
But he's the best escort for our bad hackers. Plus it will do his weight issue the world of good.
If she's sound and comfortable to work, then why not!? Age is just a number. She probably doesn't feel 29 inside

I'm sure she'll be fine, just walk hacks will no doubt benefit him greatly and you can just see how she goes... although probably being out on your own would have been better than that debacle, unfortunate that the farmer was so inconsiderate though!
