A friend is taking on a 7 year old draft type who has been a field ornament for three years.

The horse was previously a happy hacker and has always been healthy - the lack of work was down to the owner's personal problems.

How should she proceed to bring the horse back into work?

She's hoping to do a bit of trec and pleasure rides eventually.

slowly and assess food intake aswell.
Short little lessons/workouts are better than long tiring ones.
End on a good note and keep an eye on body condition too.

good luck.
I bought a paddock ordament a while ago, now i am working her 5-6 times a week.
But it took about 4months to be happy with the routine and getting shoeing and general saddle fitting right.
Remember to alway look at this as new muscles will be forming and a ever changing body will be developing:)
riding at least 45min including warm up and cooling down as well as a full on hour lesson. (hard one) well iam buggered after it!

good luck
