Any exercise tips for building back muscle without over straining? We are hacking out in walk, but I need to get him back into schooling.
He was seen by back person just over a week ago.

I was told lots of long reining over raised poles with an old mare of mine and just loads of long and low work :)

Carrot stretches.... Proved to strengthen the multifidus (sp!) muscles (ie the deep postural muscles) go onto www.horse.com and search videos (sign up - free) and watch a brilliant video on back pain by dr. Hilary Clayton.

If your just walking make sure poll is level or lower then withers (ie long low) but more importantly too make you walk out with purpose so horse is really pushing off from the hind, ie marching off. Work a little everyday over raised poles (upto knee height) in walk in hand, walking backwards a few steps and doing some leg yield etc all this will strengthen and build up topline/back etc

I have had to do lots and lots of long reining sometimes in a chambon and then lungeing as well in either running reins or chambon or pessoa depending on the horse. And as other said over poles and the raied poles its a long process

If you are re-habing, what was the original issue? That may determine what is the most appropriate way forwards.

Working under saddle correctly however rarely does any harm....marching forwards into a contact, working over the back.

When my mare was coming back into work after a sore back the physio said daily carrot stretches, long reining or inhand over a vertical line of alternately raised poles, lots of walking to start with then build up to more and also lunging for short periods :)

Gunnergundog....
He had strained the muscles in his back just behind the saddle and dropping his right hip.

I lightly schooled for the 1st time in a month for about 15 mins, a few hours later he was slightly tense and sensitive in his back where it was strained.
We have been hacking since treatment with no issues in regards to pain. Walking and trotting.
But schooling just seemed too much for him but he prefers to be in the school so I want to get him back into work without hurting or over doing it.
