Hello,

In a few weeks I am going to a show and keeping my horse there for 3 nights. I need to bring my own bedding and haylage and am wondering if anyone has ever put these in the trailer with the horse? If so how and where do you secure them? Id hate for the bales to somehow get underneath him but I dont think I have enough room in the car for them and all my kit... Also any other tips for stay away shows and any must-brings? TIA!

I've done it in both a trailer and a lorry. I've always put them in the spare partition and never had a problem with them moving - the bales are heavy and shouldn't shift at the speed you'd be driving. I do still always worry about it though 😂. A friend of mine converted her spare partition into a semi-permanent tack / storage area with hooks and boxes and it never caused an issue.

When I used a trailer, I'd also use a bungee to secure some mucking out tools in the front, or you can tuck them behind the bales on the far side from the horse. Other must brings include a turnout rug in case the stables are leaky, wine, snacks as well as your usual brekkie / lunch, comfy shoes and maybe a fold-up trolley to lug stuff around and muck out into (I made the mistake of buying a fold-up wheelbarrow and it was useless!).

Have fun!! Where are you going?

Super thanks - All great advice! I'm having a panic since its the first one and I'd hate to mess it up 😂😅 Im going to the Northern Ireland Festival in Cavan. Already stressed since the friend that was meant to go with me has dropped out so I'm furiously looking for someone else! I'm borrowing my sisters boyfriend for one of the days so thats a start 😂

You can buy bales of shavings at Cavan EQ that’s what I always did
Unfortunately I wasnt able to get a stable at Cavan since they were sold out in January before I'd even qualified! Luckily my (non-horsey) brother lives near by and has stables I can take advantage of! It was very frustrating though to not be able to get a stable on site since they say they had over 500 available

Yep shove it in trailer - in spare partition and doesn’t move if loaded properly. I tie down wheelbarrows

I put mine in builder/ dumpy sacks and then I loop the handles of the bags up on tie points etc. so they can't move in the spare partition.

I bring shavings and a bale of the yard hay (which we can buy at home) I always tie it to the hooks in the partition. I have tried driving to a show with our pony and it ended between her legs - no clue how. I suspect she was clawing at it and it inched over. So always tie it doen. No loose items are allowed during hauling under our traffic laws anyways.

I always used to put mine in the a frame section of the trailer, bungeed against the front wall. Loads of useful bars and fixings in an ifor williams! Now if i have to put something in the other partition I make sure to stack it in a way that stops it scooting under the partition and bungee it in place, trickier in my current trailer but theres usually a way.

If you are using shavings make sure to open the bags in a way that means you can put clean shavings back in. I made the mistake of ripping the bags right down the seam and chucking them away, so had no option but the throw away the best part of two clean bales the next morning......
