Hi guys!
I've got an ISH who has a weak Sacrioilliac joint, in his back I believe?
Well I have been told to do lots of work to strengthen his back.. So Pessoa work ect.. Is there anything else you would suggest?
Also how would I build the work up to then start riding? I was told 6 weeks of lunge work to strengthen first.. Any advice would be fab as want to make sure I do this right :D

Who told you to lunge out of interest?

I've recently had to bring my horse back into work after a bad back but he only received vet treatment after being screwed over many times by 'back people' i don't trust any of them.

After some steroid injecions I was told to just get staright back on, avoid any arena/ lunge work as it does more harm than good. To begin with i hacked in walk for no more than 10mons and gradually built up from there adding a bit or trotting then a bit of cantering. He's been back in work over 2 months and we only just started cantering and haven't stepped foot in an arena yet.

If you do lunge you might find an equi ami better than a pessoa.

My horse is just coming back into ridden work after recovering from a damaged ligament in his back.

My vet said lunge in a Pessoa (I used an equiami) for three weeks, 20 mins a time, 3x a week, and now I am to start hacking him out in walk, gradually building up to add trot and then canter over the next 3 weeks.

My horse had a similar issue.

I was told walk work long and low for 6 weeks and lunge work in walk with a Pessoa and long lining again all in walk.

After this I then gradually introduced trot doing all of the above for four weeks before then introducing canter work.

I also twice a week did some of the TTeam ground work exercises and body work exercises and I took it very steady.

after perseverance my boy is getting stronger and looks great and touching wood has not had any reoccurring issues.

I have a great Mctimoney practitioner who comes every six months was every three at first and has given me exercises to so with him before and after I work.

Unfortunately this is all time consuming and frustrating if you are wanting to compete but it's worth it.

I also have saddle fit checked every three months too.

Hope this helps.
