Ask your vet to give you a fitness build up regime around the injury that put them out, its difficult to say, without knowing the problem.
If fit for walking id try some in hand walking over the week gradually building up fron 10 mins a day to 30 mins over the week then re assess, depending on how theyre coping and as said, the main injury that put them out :)

My boy was on box rest for a number of months, I was told to start off with 5 minutes walk and increase it by 5 minutes each week until it was up to 1 hour then I was allowed to introduce 2 minutes trot increased to 5 minutes 2 weeks later and then add 5 minutes every 2 weeks for 2 months then introduce canter the same way as the trot. That was for a broken elbow so needs to be done slowly, not sure what your problems were so make not need to take as long. Hope this helps and you get back to normal fitness just try and remember there is no hurry and it takes as long as it takes.

sorry for got to say, December it was snowy so couldn't ride, followed by a lack of saddle, followed by my back injury not him now all sorted and im fit to ride so just wandering what to do with him :) THANKS

So he's not been injured?

Ok, I would hack (start with short hacks and build up to longer ones) in walk only for a month. Then in the second month, introduce trot and as he gets fitter, some canter. In the third month I would start doing some schooling. Again start easy and build up over time.
