Bringing on a youngster

Rachel rode Phantom today, first time in 6 or 7 weeks. he was a star

Didn't even hoon about as he used to when saddled.
He is rsing 4, backed last year and ridden weekly.

She wants to do stuff with him, so I guess it is schooling first.
She plans to do dressage and jumping.

Any tips or starters for her? She is rising 12

Phantom hasn't schooled as such, backed in two weeks and hacked, now he needs to start work

Lots of circles and transitions to get him balanced, maybe introduce simple movements such as leg-yield and direct transitions (halt to trot to halt). Lots of repitition and a very gentle hand and leg so when she starts competing its much easier.

Definitely video her, a rider can learn so much by watching herself and get some walk and trot dressage tests and try them out.....after a few weeks/months video the same tests again and see if there is any improvement. But make the schooling fun..I'm not really one to give advice about youngsters as I've never had one but Samson (6 year old cob) also learnt quicker if he was having fun!!
