I have a dilemma. I own a 6 yr old KWPN who hasn't done much and needs bringing on but I don't have the talent to do it myself. Someone I know is willing to ride my horse for me and start competing etc which sounds like a good plan to me but I was wondering if anyone more experienced could spot any potential pitfalls?

Sounds like a sensible solution providing the person he is going to is good enough to produce the horse for you. Also have all the costs/commitments etc on both sides agreed in writing to prevent any nasty shocks! Another alternative is to produce the horse yourself but under a good regular instructor/trainer. After all you will be the one riding/competing the horse in the future. Hope it goes well.

Thanks wonkey_donkey. The person involved is definitely good enough to do the job. She is a very capable rider so I have no worries on that front. I haven't yet worked out any agreement re costs/commitments etc. I would welcome any advice from anyone who has experience in this type of situation tho'.

At the moment the plan is that the horse stays on the current yard where we both have other horses and I continue to have lessons to help me bring him on and the other girl rides him as well. I don't want to "lose touch" with the horse completely so I want to carry on his education (under supervision) myself for a couple of days a week as well. I will be doing flatwork/schooling only whilst the other girl will be doing all the jumping. I am hoping that this will work and that he won't get confused having two different riders at this stage in his development?

I was going to send my young horse away...was going to cost me £175 aweek on full livery, If i had the money I would have gone along with that plan. So now I lung her 4/6 days a week only for 15 or so mins then hack out 2 times aweek then i have a few lessons. and I have found this works for me, i have seen a BIG difference in her allready. ie: her top line, ect ect, have a go your self but you have to keep it going I have also found that we are really gelling with each other and really getting to no her... keep us posted !!

Thanks Gucci_B, I am not just being modest, I really don't have the talent to bring on a young horse but I certainly want to be involved so I think that I will definitely try and take the help which has been offered.

I'm glad that you are getting on well with your mare. Keep us posted on how you both get on too!
