Trailers are.thank god i left my son with family. Went to collect a couple of horses only an hr from home.ambleing along going downhill and one of the mares lost her footing and paniced! I never want to see a trailer on two wheels again!never been so sacred in my life! All happened in slow motion, cars swerving out of my way as in trying to keep my car under control.i am considering getting a lorry now!

Oh glad you are ok just goes to show how quickly things happen and a incident like this shows how important keeping the trailer/ tyres in good order and useing a substantial tow vehicle not one thats just big enough!!! so you have a better chance to maintain control in a unforseen situation....

Thats terrible Koeffee - Hope both you and the mare are okay, and neither of you are scarred by your experience.

As pointed out by perfect11s, its so important to be aware when towing, but I also believe its no more risky whether you are in a lorry, or even tootling along in just your car - unforeseen accidents do happen. I wouldn't tarnish all trailer travel as dangerous - the potential is there for all forms of vehicles.

i like to think im carefull made sure all tyres had correct pressure, use a freelander so decent enough to tow!!!! mares got home fine. happy munching away!!! true what they say never let your gaurd down.

How scary, it's awful enough being out of control in a car, let alone with a trailer behind.
Glad your horses are both okay.

Scary experience.....but a freelander is not enough to tow 2 horses, it has a very low towing weight :(

Glad no one was hurt

Glad you and horses are all O.K. Got to add tho, we had a Freelander and were told it is not adequate to pull a trailer and horses. Think from memory Freelanders are quite light. We have now got a Nissan Navara, not got a trailer at the moment tho !!! At least everyone was alright.

That sounds like an extremely lightweight trailer. I had a horse go mental in a trailer, and throw my towing vehicle across the M48 closing teh old severn bridge and completely writing off the trailer, but the wheels never left teh ground and I never felt out of controll. I had a completely smashed up back ramp, the breast bar was ripped out, the room was smashed and so was a partition. The horse was seriously injured. but the wheels never left the ground and teh car towed it out of it.
A Freelander is really not a suitable towing vehicle it is too light weight and not able to cope when the pressure is on. My vehicle was a 2.4 turblo diesel with a towing cpapcity of 3 tonnes. We survived a major incident with a 17hh and a 17'2 on board.

What a scary experience! I'm glad all are ok...

Unfortunately Freelanders are renowned for being completely **** for towing horseboxes... I would review if I were you.

big hugs xx

Its stuff nightmares are made of! Someone I know locally had a tragic accident with a trailer recently and now every time I tow mine anywhere it puts the fear of god up me! Take care, deep breaths! x

As above, Freelanders are not towing vehicles.

So glad you all got back safely, you must have been petrified.

How awful for you - gald everyone is ok.

I tow with a Mitsubishi L200 (truck) and it is up to the job - I don't know a lot about towing vehicles but several people on here have suggested that a Freelander is not up to it - so please take their advice and review your vehicle.

Incidentally what type of trailer do you have?

Didn't the law change a couple of years ago to say that the weight of your car plus the weight of your loaded trailer must not exceed the gross towing weight of vehicle?

I know this is common sense anyway but 99% sure the made it a legal thing.

Just working out that if 2 x 16.2 hh horses have a combined weight of say 1300kg and your average Ifor Williams trailer is roughly 750kg - that's the Freelander and the other small 4 x 4 out the window.

Not having a dig it's just this post really made me think that other than the big 4x4's i.e. Shoguns, Discos etc nothing else that you can legally, let alone safely, tow with.

Very glad the OP and her horses are both home safe and well - scary way to learn a lesson.

I dont want to appear nasty .. however let this be a lesson... A FREELANDER IS NOT UP TO TOWING TWO HORSES.. next time you might kill someone or the horses, and your insurance is also invalid if you are over loaded... trade it in for something more suitable like a discovery
or only tow one horse please ...

hope both you and horse are ok now, must have shaken you up
I too tow with a freelander - but i do only have a single horse trailer and its fine with that-really tows well - i used to have a double trailer and took partition out for my bad traveller and it coped with that fine too - must admit i feel it would be too heavy for it to tow 2 horses - as max capicity is 2 tonne - people are having a go at you as it must have been a terrible experience for you - but i would review whether to tow more than one horse again..... now go hava a stiff drink tonight and make yourself feel better

So glad you are OK.

Just goes to show how important the maximum weights are - they are nothing to do with how well they can tow but more with how well they can stop, towing a bucking trailer, in situations like that.

Have a stiff one!!!

Frightening.
I don't think anyone (as suggested above) is 'having a go at you' but offering advice for your and your horses future safety.
What sort of trailer was it?
