Hi

Does anyone know if BE lease talented horses for top riders?

I have a talented horse who I can not afford to run anymore but yet don't want to sell.

BE wouldn't get involved with anything like this. They are purely the governing body for the sport.

It is possible to lease a horse out to an eventer. However it is VERY unlikely a top rider would pay a lease, in fact you would have to pay the costs to have your horse on their yard. Some top riders will also only take horses with good form at specific levels & serious potential (4*/team horse)

There are however lots of lesser known, good riders who might be interested in taking the ride & sometimes amateur riders will consider paying a lease for a schoolmaster type or something guaranteed good results.

What level has the horse competed at?

An 8 year old CCI** with faultless results. I do feel this horse horse has all the qualities to go to the top. I had heard BE did lease horses for talented riders.

I think the members may have something to say if they did! BE through trainers will put riders and owners together but they certainly do not get involved in financing the job .
If its that good I would sell it most riders that will bring it on will be wary of taking it on without owning at least part of it. To be blunt riders that may be tempted by the lease are not likely to be riders that will do your horse justice.

However, depending on the horse, there are quite a lot of people out there who do lease event horses e.g. some good juniors or young riders not in the position to buy additional talented horses.

About 10 years ago my instructor sent her CIC*** horse to a professional rider to take him higher than she could herself. She had to pay the rider, not the other way around.

There was at one point discussion about the possibility of the federations leasing top horses because they do something similar in Holland -and Germany I think - to ensure top rides are not sold abroad. But it isn't done here. There are any number of up and coming eventers who might be glad of the ride and might be willing to reach an agreement with you about reduced costs from your side if the horse is good enough. But as others have said those who might be prepared to pay for a lease - rather than being paid - are not necessarily going to be the quality rider you are looking for. Unless possibly it is also an U18 horse. Eventing really isn't a sport in which it is possible to make an independent living. The prize money simply isn't good enough. Riders rely on owners I'm afraid.

Perhaps a younger rider, or an amateur, might take the horse on as a loan, rather than a lease? You'd be looking more at the schoolmaster/lower levels though.

I agree with those that say a pro rider/someone able to progress the horse up the levels will likely not want to pay to have the horse and pay to compete it too - it just wouldn't be financially viable, and would potentially take up time/stable space that they could give to a paying customer's horse.
