I've been watching Burghley and am fascinated with eventing (purely from a spectators POV!) .... but know very little about it, could anyone give me a potted version of the terminology and grades for example I know Burghley is a '4* event' but what are the ones held at Chatsworth and Somerford for example? what are BE points? my RI was saying his son had won £4k at an event - is this good? Sorry for the slightly inane questions and I couldn't really decipher the BE website!

*takes deep breath*

OK, BE is the national governing body and runs it's own set of competitions starting at 80cm level and working through 90/100/Novice/Intermediate/Advanced. These are all progressive in terms of height and technicality of jumps and you have to qualify to move up a level. You only score points at Novice level and above (6 for winning at Novice) and you score more points at the higher levels...

With me so far? :p

FEI (the International Equestrian Federation) has 4 levels of competition, 1* to 4* with 4* being the very highest level. As before, these have progressive levels of difficulty and you have to qualify through the earlier levels (in addition to qualification at national events, i.e. BE). There are vague crossovers with BE, a 1* competition is sort of equal to a Novice at BE, 2* Intermediate etc but as it is run under FEI rules it isn't an exact crossover. Events can be over 1 or 3 days (although most of the 3-days are now over 4 to allow for the dressage)

Still with me?

From memory, Somerford runs BE 100 - Intermediate as well as FEI 1*, Chatsworth up to 3*. £4000 is a very good prize, at the lower levels you will be lucky to cover your entry even if you win. Prize money depends a lot on sponsorship of events. I'm sure someone else will explain it better though :D

Thankyou Rhino, you've explained perfectly :D I had no idea that there were two lots of 'grading' hence why I couldn't understand why they did not mention the *'s on the BE website, there asking for Stewards at Kelsall soon, I might offer my services now I know a bit more about it :D
