Hi everyone I was thinking of changing my insurance company to British Horse Society Membership insurance. I paying a lot of money to my current insurance companies that doesn’t include any vet bills it costs me €230 a year just for public library , Personal accident and i get the market value for the horse if my horse dies . Should I change insurance ? and do you have experienced with British horse society insurance?

BHS Insurance is 3rd party liability only. There is a small amount of personal injury, but only a small amount and in extreme circumstances (loss of sight, loss of a limb). It is an insurance of last resort, meaning if you are covered elsewhere in any form they will pass responsibility to the other insurance cover.

That is not a criticism of the insurance, just ensuring you are aware of the facts. The BHS is not an insurance provider. A secondary company provide insurance as a benefit to BHS members. Their public liability is a good cover level (I'm not 100% certain of the figures for Ireland) and certainly good value if PL cover is all you are wanting.

You will hear of people who are dissatisfied with the cover, the majority of whom did not understand the points I have outlined above.

Don't forget that one of the key things with BHS membership is that you are supporting a charity in their work too.

What some people do if they are a member of the BHS is to have an insurance policy that they can pick cover, say for vets fees, death, but don't pay for the 3rd Party as they have that as part of their membership. Which is what I used to do.

The BHS is a good Public Liability Policy as you are covered at all times, but it doesn't cover accidents to your horse, only if your horse causes damage to other people - and even then you have to read the policy cover very carefully to understand it. Some people thought they had cover, but within the terms of the policy did not.
