How many people are BHS members? What do you think is good about it? Where do you think it needs to improve? Why are you a member? If you aren't a member, why not?

I am writing an article on the BHS for Chiltern & Thames Rider and would love to know people's views, especially if they live within C&TR's readership area.

Not in the C&TR area, but i am a member of the BHS for the public liability insurance, and so I can be on the BHS register of instructors as they offer the most cost effective insurance for teaching.

I have been a member of the BHS for about 35 years now.

I belong to the BHS because they are the only national organisation to represent horse riders when dealing with the government, local authorities etc.

I have been a volunteer access/bridleway officer for nearly the entire period of my membership dealing with the maintenence of existing and creation of new bridleway routes.

The BHS deal with many different matters such as welfare, safety, education, road safety and access/bridleway matters.

They could do a lot more if more horse owners/riders where members.

Im a member but when i rang them up the other day to get help they couldnt help me !

See i rang them as lady down are way has started teaching children to ride , but i wouldnt let the lady ride a rocking horse.. she has no qualifications to do this or insurance , But couldn't get help

I am in the Chiltern and Thames area. I joined the BHS and am not impressed! I joined about 7 weeks ago. Waited two weeks, received nothing in the way of membership card or pack, phoned them and got lots of apologies and was told they would send another pack. Still nothing!

I went to their trade stand at RIHS and again got lots of apologies and told they were very busy at this time of year which means things are a bit slow. How long does it take to process a membership?

So far I have paid £57 for nothing and am not impressed!

I was a member many years ago to do my BHSAI, then joined more recently primarily for the public liability insurance, however this year have joined the BSJA as they cover the insurance aspect for a fraction of the cost.

Member for the insurance as they don't do much round here. Not really sure what they do do actually.
I would like to take part in the BHS HT comps but there is nothing round here and no encouragement either and that goes for British Riding Clubs as well.

Member who joined for the insurance and stayed for the excellent work they do on all aspects of horsemanship. If you search this site for carrot & spud the BHS welfare officer is the one who managed to get them removed :)

I'm also very grateful for the legal advice line, which I have used.

Not in the area, and not a member, my own thoughts are that they do a good job as being a central reference body, they do fantastic work with bridleways etc. I don't agree with their standards within their exam systems, they have examiners whose ideas went out with the dark ages but are still active examiners, please note I am not saying all of them are, there will be modern examiners and the older ones, my point is that they don't seem to have to do any upgrade courses throughout the years to maintain the examiner status!!!

I think their welfare line is good for offering advise and sorting through real welfare concerns and none welfare issues, but don't like the fact that they have refered welfare concerns to other charities to investigate and then claim they have sorted it out themselves, credit should go where it's due!!!!

But to end on a good note, I like their offer of public liability insurance, and they do offer good advise.
