Says who ? I don’t see the public demanding an end to racing, every year at grand national time there is a bit of a muttering about banning that one particular race but that seems to be the extent of the discussion.

I agree, it won't be banned except at some point in the far future, but it may have died out before then of it's own accord.

Unlike you, I do see an inexorably rising demand to the ending of racing, particularly jump racing and 2 year old racing.

So many of us have the most amazing former racehorses in our lives for which we have racing to thank. Would the thoroughbred continue as a sport horse or end up a rare breed? Would the depth of breeding and type within the thoroughbred be lost? Just some thoughts.

Would it matter in the wider scheme of horse breeding? They are very much a manufactured breed, they didn't occur without man's heavy intervention, not long in the past. The best genes are already in the light warmbloods. And it would also be an end to the stream of unsound horses I see being put up for sale on 2 TB racehorse rehoming sites I follow.

I think a ban is an awful long way off, I would guess not much closer than a ban on eating meat.
I also suspect that if a ban were brought in racing would continue illegally in some form.

Right now, on a normal Friday afternoon there are five meetings going on, plenty of runners, plenty of viewers and punters. Why on Earth would anyone think it’s a good idea to ban it ?

Exactly, the best Thoroughbred blood for non-racing animals has already been accepted into some major studbooks.

There are a lot of issues with warm blood breeding aren’t there? I’m sure racing will change and there may be major changes but I’d like the thoroughbred to remain as it is and not be diluted into a light warm blood though must admit not my specialist area at all. Just love the thoroughbred horse.

For the sake of the horses?

As a point of interest, have you ever retrained any straight out of racing? Or visited any low end training yards racing the lower quality horses?

It’s amazing that you don’t even follow the racing and yet you consider yourself to be an expert on all aspects of it!
Anyway, this is a pointless debate, racing is fine as it is and will go on long after we have trundled off. Even the Grand National had no fallers this year and the critics seem to have gone silent.

Always a sign of someone losing the argument that they make a personal attack, Bonny. I have never claimed to be an expert on all aspects of racing but I do know the death statistics published by the BHA, have retrained about 12 directly out of racing stables, had friends who owned racers, read a blog from a top end NH stables, seen some very sad horses in or recently in bin end racing yards while seeking purchases, seen lame ex racers up for sale weekly by two yards that deal with them in high numbers, bought 2 life endingly broken ones myself, known many others (2 right now on the forum) and nobody will ever convince me that it's right to race horses under 30 months old.

We've had 6 out of training and they've all been lovely, typical TB 'accident prone' but all retired at a respectable age and none that had to retire through anything attributable to racing.

I love racing, we've recently bought a small share in a 3 year old who is trained fairly locally to us. The Trainer is a true horseman and all of the horses are loved, appreciated and found appropriate permanent loan homes when their racing days are over.

There has been research that racehorses started and trained as 2 year olds are less likely to fall victim to catastrophic injuries. It seems illogical to me but the research is there.

I don't think racing will be the first equestrian sport to be 'banned'. It generates so much revenue and has a broader appeal than any other equestrian sport.

I honestly believe that it won't be banned before meat production is on the cusp of being banned too.

Nobody has to convince you, you are not making any decisions. Anyone can have an opinion but racing will go on as it is for years to come, it will be tweaked round the edges to make it as safe as it can be but that’s all.

In any race there are always very many happy people - the punters who backed the winner and the owner, trainer and jockey.

As a local trainer said as an after dinner speaker - racing is 90% frustration, disappointment but the other 10% more than makes up for it.

He has a Grand National winner in his stable yard that goes out to competitions, eventing, showing and such like.
