At the end of January B and I went to our first SJ comp (his first proper one ever and my first for years) where I practically had a panic attack at the thought of jumping a 70cm! He jumped double clear. Just over three months later after he fulfilled a horsey dream and took me round Broadway BE80.

My friend had warned me that perhaps I should come with her and look at a BE80 course as it would not be what you would expect from an unaffiliated 80.... She was right. The XC course whilst not at all technical but was as wide as it was big and I was totally distraught, thinking I was a complete idiot to be taking a horse round it that had never even done a ODE in his life (he had done a 2'3 hunter trial and an eventers challenge as prep...) and a rider who still suffers horrendous nerves and has never done a full on cross country course, bar the tiny hunter trial.

The dressage was rather poor, he warmed up beautifully and then it all went wrong in the ring but we came out with a 39 which I was actually very pleased with as I didn't think we deserved it! Back to the lorry for a change and a break as my friend went SJ. I tied B up outside and quickly went to change my top whereby he chose that exact moment to snap his bailing twine and get loose, so I fit in very well with the serious eventers running across the lorry park to retrieve this overgrown hairy pony in my bra, jodphurs and socks. Little s***.

He redeemed himself with a beautiful clear SJ, not batting an eyelid at the marquees and things going on around the ring. On to the XC. I had walked this course twice. The steward asked me if I knew the course. Of course I knew it, I walked it twice! B shot out of the start box and I had the ride of my life. He was so, so honest and brave. He's very green and I had to really ride most of the fences but even when we seemed very close to having a stop he pulled it out of the bag and cleared everything. I just love that his attitude when he is scared or nervous is, on the whole, so incredibly genuine. So lots of pats and cheers for him after every jump which was commented on! Until idiot rider here managed to get us elminated by missing an XC fence. The horse actually clocked on to the fence but I had missed it in my course walk (s) and pulled him away from it, it was the third to last so I heard at the end we had been elminated. What an idiot!!!! We would have come 10th had it not been for my lack of ability to count and remember fences.

His greenness weirdly gave me confidence because I had to pretend that I was, even though I was utterly terrified. I could not have asked for more of him that day, he really is my horsey soulmate. Here are some pics (with use for social media!).

Well done you! So lovely to see how much fun you're having after all the stress and tears you had with Torres and the naughty mare (I can't remember her name, sorry). It's good to see that you've found your perfect partner in crime at last!

Thank you!!! He has made a horrid year worth the wait. I do miss my bestest boy and there is always a pang wishing it was him that I was doing all this with but I could not adore Basil more :)

I am sure it is still tough, Torres was a very handsome, lovely chap... but what a gem you've found in Basil, he looks like a super boy and you can really see that in your very smiley face! :)

I love the photo of him jumping the wall, very neat and careful, also refreshing seeing you in tweed and tie rather than navy and white, good that some newcomers are sticking with tradition.

Next time you will double check the numbers when walking, we all make mistakes, the more normal is starting before the bell SJ so at least you got a run xc and B has no idea he was given an E, onwards and upwards from here, you deserve to be having fun after the dreadful time you had with your last two, he also seems to be really enjoying life with you, being busy obviously suits him he looks fab.

Well done! Lovely pics.

I've been toying with the idea of attempting some BE80's.....no idea on it though! Did you do it on a ticket?

Yes I did! I knew for Broadway I would be ok getting in but our next one always has a wait list so ive offered to volunteer. They are definitely bigger XC than unaffiliated though but I thought the SJ was surprisingly small!

What lovely pictures. I will tell you that EVERYONE gets eliminated for wrong course/missing a fence, etc. etc. - the only thing is, make sure it is the ONLY time.

Always check the course map before you walk and when you get back and remember the numbering on the fences as you go round. Stop thinking about how nervous you are and think how you can help your horse.

By the way, he looks just lovely and keen to help you, so have lots of fun.

Well done, you look like you are really enjoying yourselves. He is fairly tucking his knees up in the photo of him jumping the wall. It sounds like the start of a fun season for you both. Annoying about the elimination but I am sure you won't make the same mistake again.

Fabulous report! Great photos, you both look like you're having a lovely time. We've all been there with missing a fence, onwards and upwards! Looking forward to reading your next report :).

Ok I'm sorry but I couldnt stop laughing at the description of you chasing a horse around a lorry park in only a bra, jodhpurs and boots. I can see that will be something that will happen to me in future.

Very well done though for being brave and doing it. So what that you got eliminated, it was your first try and you did really well. Next time, you will have less nerves and I bet do even better than you would have done this time. Congrats. :)

I'm at Broadway this weekend myself doing the BE80 eventers challenge. I hope I have as much fun as you!

That first XC pic, your face is brilliant :D
I am so pleased that you found him after your previous issues :)

How do you add photo to post, i have been trying for ages to post photo of new horse and still cant work it out, its driving me nuts

My face is always so horrendous in these pics! I either looking constipated or terrified. One of the two! Bar the galloping one where I think I was vaguely happy...

Haha mine too, I always pull the stupidest faces! But I admire your pluck OP and well done to you both. Sounds like you did fab.

So pleased to read this and see your fab pics. I followed all the posts on the mare, so it's great to see this update 😀.
I missed a fence Xc in my second BE80, would have been placed if not for that!
