Well where do i start!! i've had a couple of days to look back, but still v upset about day.............

Dressage was ok, but warm up very, very busy so i just couldn't get a relaxed test - 38

.

Sj - if you have been reading my posting you may understand that my horse has warm up issues (can't cope with busy ones), so i've been schooling at home and taking him out to busy BSJA venues (and he's been brilliant and jumping well). You get to BE and the 'loon returns'

. So no jumping warm up just trotting and cantering, poor Sj steward was having a nightmare!!! but did squeeze in
cool.gif
. On course we jumped over 1 and 2 like a TIT!!! then round came back to me, then had fence 7 down and last fence and on way out member of public asked me if i wanted my shoe back!!!! as i lost it between fences 6 and fence 7!!!
So yes pissed off with score but i didn't notice we even lost shoe so i do have a super star horse really, with a TIT rider!

XC - a total fly machine with braking issues so a bit fast
blush.gif
, but BRILLIANT.

Thanks for reading -

BUT HELP!!! I think i'm doing all right things for sj and STILL getting poles down............ and to top my weekend off my other horse is NOW lame with summer mud fever!

mutter mutter mutter.............. answers on postcard for new rider

hey

i have sj downs , actualy i cant keep them up at the moment, but we went to aylesford to use there jumps yesterday to have a bit of a jump, and im getting a bit big on millie
frown.gif
so when i drop mu shoulders over her she doesnt get up high enough, so i decided to sit up for as long as i could and by magic the jumps stayed up!! millie tends to rush a bit as well, but when i did this she didnt!

dont know if that helps

xx

Thx for advice, i'll try ANYTHING

but at BSJA he's fine listern etc, BUT you get to BE and he rushes and almost bolts through bridle!!! so i have to ride with soft neck, relax and keep leg wrapped around, the quaility is coming

BUT is soooooooooo fustrating as it seems he kicks out poles FOR FUN!!!

Just to butt in on your post - can you tell me what the intro course is like? I'm thinking of doing the riding club area 18 novice, which is on the intro course.

I'm the biggest wus going though!

Perhaps its just the big open space at BE that gets him going... BSJA warm ups are so much more enclosed. Could you look out for SJ on grass to practise..even if its unaff? I am sure things will gradually improve. Keep at it.
smile.gif

CSJ - it's tiny, really easy inviting intro course which is why the RC stuff is held there I guess.

K_O - I could offer you platitudes, but instead I'll offer some advice - are you certain you have eradicated your habit that Yogi mentioned of not having your backside in the saddle? I know I've been working hard to get rid of my bad habits and so therefore I know that when under pressure I revert to type and go back to the old ways unless I use a lot of brain power to stop myself!! I reckon that could perhaps help? I might be way off the mark as obviously I haven't seen you ride since Aldon last yr, but I can see how that could be your problem if you see what I mean?

I loved course, not big at all, they have changed start from last year, so you jump what was last year's last fence, which does looks big, but kick and they it jumps lovely

grin.gif
promise you.
If you're going to go, give us a shout as i'm hoping to do aswell

I wish it was a large area, Broadway was a compact BE
confused.gif
, xc and sj were next door and he did eye up xc whilst on my way to SJ, so this is why no jumping warm up!! and To try and keep his one BRAIN cell under control!!!

My aim this year has been to really control my arse and shoulders
grin.gif
tongue.gif
tongue.gif
and this is why i've been on misson to jump and jump but at comps and not so much training. As i want to stop (big time) rider returning to type!!

Belmont i was cr*p, but he did blow up big style in warm up!!! not alot to work with
frown.gif

Solihull much much better and had my cousin grooming and she's miss scary pant, (she got to burghley, so if i was cr*p she wouldn't have stop herself and told me
smirk.gif
, but praised me and my riding and said i should be jumping higher!!)

Broadway - Being cr8p until fence 3 then i felt it was a good round and didn't even realise we'd lost a shoe jumping!! and did only rub 2 fences and he did only have 3 paddles on!

Been to seen trainer for shoulder to cry on!! and she has given me a good kick up arse........................ and did point out how many horse would still jump after losing front paddle!

Sounds like a mostly good day
wink.gif
At risk of stating the bleeding obvious, pony doesn't know whether it is BE or BSJA so you have to figure out what is making the difference... Something about the environment that you can practise? Or something about the way you ride/deal with him? Once you figure this out you'll be on the way to solving it
wink.gif

you hit nail on head - he eyes XC!!! I think i'm going to have to be careful with venues and keep plugging at it really, but i just so upsetting for rider (not horse as he is having lovely time
tongue.gif
)

Thanks for that

My suggestions - jump more on grass, go to local shows rather than BSJA, so its not in an arena (unless you've found BSJA on grass??)

As for the mud fever will pm you!

Ok don't know if these will help but here are the tips from my Robert Stevens lesson yesterday. I think Soap and Spud have a few issues in common such as getting overwhelmed by the grass, open space, etc and becoming excited and fast.
smile.gif

So here are Roberts tips...
. when collecting back for a transition/corner/halt etc 'break the neck' eg don't stop/collect in a straight line, ask for some bend in the neck either direction and this makes the horse softer and come back
. sit like you are on pins/egg shells. My weight back in the saddle after, and driving beofre fences make Soap go wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwheeeeeeeeeeeeee! so I worked on a lighter seat satmore at the front of the saddle.
. squeeze JUST on take off. I had an iron clamp all the way round and resulted in a wall of death round! so adopt an almost do nothing relaxed approach to a fence, with a squeeze up on the last stride
. imagine at any moment you might be asked to come back to walk before the fence, if you can't come back to walk within 2 strides then your trot/canter isn't light and supple

and saving the best till last

RIDE THE HORSE.....NOT THE FENCE!

I am so guilty of this and am in the process of breaking my horrid habit of firing Soap at spreads!
smile.gif

and just WAIT WAIT and WAIT a bit more for the fence to come to you, it's so hard, but such a great feeling when you can trust yourself to let that happen
smile.gif

So those were my lesson tips I hope some of them may help/apply to Spud. I'm not sure how far away you are but I would deffo recommend a lesson with RS he is fab, he really took a very different approach to Soap, more of an understanding the horses height of emotion and temperament approach. That sounds a bit 'tree hugging' but I hope you get my drift
smile.gif

How frustrating I really feel for you. Do they need to be bigger to get his concentration I have to admit I have found with Poppy regular athletic exercises with V poles at home have helped even when she does lose concentration. I guess try not to worry as it will in time get better.

Another hit on the nail!!! more than one person has suggested this route
