hi all,

i have just been and bought a new pony! she is absolutely amazing and i am so i love with her! she is just a baby and unbroken but i absolutely knew she was the girl for me. she is a welsh sec D, bred from Nebo black magic lines and i can see she has loads of potential to be great! she picked me too, she kept following me round the field and resting her head on my shoulders, we both felt a bond straight away!
only problem is i clearly fell in love too quickly and didnt think too practically. i have been loking for the right pony/horse for around 7 months now and got a bit over excited when i went to see this mare. She was advertised as 14.2 and at 4 years i figured would grow to around 14.3, maybe(if lucky!) pushing 15 hands. i have just been over to see her for the second time to check she is ok (not moving yards until next saturday) and thought, hmm she looks a little small to be 14.2 so i measured her. bless my little angel, she is only 13.3, nearly 14h! noooo! cant believe i didnt pay more attention to such an important detail!
needless to say, i am starting slimming world! i am 12 stone :( and there is no way i am getting on her! a friend of mine was going to back her anyway, then she will be turned away for the winter. that gives me a year to lose about 2.5 stone! hopefully my girl will fill out and fill up a bit by then too.
if not, i will just enjoy having her around and my mum can ride her. gutted.

you will be fine! she's welsh, she is going to be strong! 12 stone is nothing, she will carry that fine!

I have a 15'2 conny x tb and she was Very skinny when I first got her! she carried me when i weighed 15 stones and she didn't struggle at all!

I done ww not slimming world and lost 4 stone, so now its defo not a problem for her to carry me but hopefully if she is to make 15'2 she will, she might just be a slow grower!

Good luck :)

Yep It's not the height that counts for weight carrying it's the bone, she should be OK with Nebo lines although tbh I would be a bit worried if you are thinking of showing her as a D because you will be against bigger horses-see if you can get the details of sire/dam and their heights and if the genes are there feed her well over winter then she should grow a bit but I doubt if you will get another hand at 4. Hope you didn't overstretch your budget!

She's a D so will do alot more filling out growing I bet, plus a lady at my old yard who was by no means 'small', prob about 12 stone had a lovely stocky C who carried her all his life untill he was 28, and was always full of it!! he was 12.3 on his tip toes but huge stocky legs at each corner! welshies are something else, your going to have such fun with her even if she's on the weeny side :)

It's hard to say size wise if its a case you have to lose the weight. My friend is 12stone with a 13.3. It looks a lot bigger, & is far more suited to her than bigger, finer horses.
And won't criticize on breaking buying rules. With projects & helping others, I'm good. My pony & daughters broke every rule, not just of buying but of logic, common sense & experience. And I can hand on heart say that if I had searched the country & bought more logically I couldn't have chosen better.

thanks for the replies!
she is classic welsh cob build, not huge at all but has a little weight on her. i know there is no way we'll get another hand but hopefully a couple more inches, her sire and dam were both 14.2. our other welshy was bought straight from the field at 4 years and 14.3. one year later with exercise and a good diet, he is now 15.2!
nope luckily didnt stretch my budget at all, infact she was an absolute bargain and only 1/3 of my budget! her owner has just had a baby and doesnt have the time or money for her and said a good home was far more important than the money. she liked us so was happy to let her go for much less than i think she is worth.:D
ill see if i can post pics - never done it before!

Upload them to photobucket and then hover over the pic, some codes appear, click the bottom one (img code) it will say copied, paste it on here. Sorted :)

Photo bucket is free so just make an account and upload. Or if you have the photo on Facebook right click and copy the image URL then click the photo button above the reply box and paste it in there

As for her size I'm riding a few section A's whilst on holiday and I'm a bit over 8 stone (and technically way too tall) but they don't mind and that's up devon hills. These small natives are strong hardy little things and don't stop filling out until quite late so she has a few more years to grow.

Good luck with her, loads more of us have brought what on paper appeared to be an unsuitable purchase but it turned out ok, me included.

Oh dear, this brings back memories !

I saw this pony in a field while walking the dogs and HAD to have him -

without really working out how big he'd be - he is half dales ..had to go half way round the county to find his owner, but like you, I just knew - told my hubbie I wanted "that" pony. It was a done deal when he went up and licked my labrador, lol.

Bought him, and then fretted for ages if he would be ok for me. But it's all worked out fab, he's 14.2 hh and even hubs has just started plodding about on him.

He's now become this - and we would not change a thing about him for the world.
