Looking through ads to find a suitable horse to buy.

Excuse my ignorance, but what does the term "broken and turned away" mean? Seems to be coming up in a lot of the ads for youngsters - generally having low price tags!

Gently backed and ridden (3 ish) - then turned out again for perhaps 6 months to mature. Ready to bring back into work, perhaps as a 4 year old. Needs experienced rider to bring into work and continue education.

It means the horse has been broken in. So has been tacked up and ridden around a little and then has been turned away again to mature.
So, now the horses are probably ready to be started again and to continue their education.

Probably not for me then.

Shame that, I spotted an ad for a horse for sale literally just down the road from me, at a price of £950. 15.2 TBx mare 4yrs old.

I am an experienced rider who's just been out of the saddle for a few years, but used to help bring young horses on when a lot younger (I was a very lightweight teenager and was often called upon for pony projects). However, I don't have the time to devote to a project.

Am I way off the mark to expect to get a safe happy hacker for around £2k?

No, you could get safe hack for that price, but it may be an older horse. I bought a 5 yr old TB for 1700, very lazy type, failed racer as couldn't be bothered!! Safe hack, jumped small course, hunted, sponsored rides etc. Look in ad trader for cheaper horses, but be prepared to do lots of travelling and have a thick skin as they are not all advertised as they actually are!! Furthermore, NEVER get on a horse without the owner/rider showing it first, no-matter what the excuse they try to give!!!!! Good luck.

They are out there, as mogsy said be prepared to travel and also act quickly as they sell quickly at that price. if you see one advertised that looks good get out to see it as soon as you can! Good luck!
