Broken Ankle- why did he do this?

I share a horse, he's a sweet pony, I think he's part cob, 14.1hh and about 12 years old. Great in the school, can be quick but always takes good care. Recently I went on my first hack on him. I was warned he was strong so I decided to go on a walking hack with another horse. He bolted as soon as he got into the field and we had a little disagreement on which way we wanted to go hmm... i fell of and broke my ankle. Im recovering and I'm raring to get back on (though no hacks for a long time). I wanted to know if anyone could explain why he did this. If not does anyone have a horse/pony similar and could tell me how they handle it? I would love to hack him again one day maybe hack him again when I'm bigger and stronger. Any suggestions?
 
No respect for his rider and he's used to making the decisions so you got in the way. Also as previous post..he's probably allowed to do this normally. Hope you make a speedy recovery :)
 
This ^ I knew someone who would let their horse gallop on any open piece of grass, she suddenly realised she had a problem when it was cantering sideways on the road before it got to them!
 
Bobandfred. I also ride my friend's cob who has a similar reputation to yours. I have to be very careful what I allow him to do on hacks as his owner is not a confident rider and he tends to play her up (and chuck her off) So on hacks we practice slowing or stopping whilst the other horses run on ahead just so we know that he will listen and not run off with her. You'll never be strong enough to arm wrestle him so much better and easier to get him listening to you and behaving a bit more politely :)
 
I'm quite a novice rider, I mean I've been riding for 8 years (since I was 4) on and off. I've started jumping but haven't really gotten into it seriously. I dont think I'm a great rider but I can ride. How could I get him listening to me. We have a lane down to where the fields are. He was absolutely fine down the lane it was literally as soon as we got into the field he bolted. A very experiennced rider-friend of mine said that maybe I should walk him round the hospital nearby (they let the horses ride round the ground. I'm still scared to do that as well.
 
You're going to be fighting a losing battle if the owner is going to undo all your good work in teaching the horse manners, by letting it gallop off every time they ride. Horses can learn to behave differently with different riders, but you sound like you don't have much chance of gaining the upper hand with this horse. The best advice I can give you is to stick to road hacking (assuming the horse is quiet on the road and only runs off on grass). Or find a better behaved horse to share.

Would it be a good idea to maybe go on a hack with the owner riding the horse and me riding a calm horse 9I have some in mind) so that I can see how she handles him.
 
That is a possibility but I'm pretty sure that the owner doesn't do this. The owners a couple of years older than me and is bigger, stronger and taller than me. She owns the horse so I am sure she has a stronger bond with the horse.
