I broke my ankle really badly 7 weeks ago, fell off but got my foot caught in the stirrup, broke it both sides & dislocated it (ouch!!) Had it pinned & plated. Had the plaster off a week ago & have started physio, can walk slowly without crutches, & use 1 crutch for longer distances. The physio reckons I can drive on Monday & start some gentle riding in a week. Has anyone else done this? The movement is definately improving, but I want to know if I'm gonna be able to compete & do any jumping this summer?? Hope so.

My mum shattered her ankle joint in a riding accident - she fell off her horse when she reared and spun round and mum fell and landed on her ankle. It was pinned and plated both sides.
She did it in the March and didnt start doing anything like driving or riding for months. I think she didnt get on her pony for about 9 months and even then it was for a 5 minute walk out.

Take it easy but make sure you do your physio

I had a similar accident a few years ago. 6 breaks in fibula, 1 in tibia and dislocated foot - ouch. 11 screws and 1 plate later..... I was in plaster for 8 weeks and recovery after that was gradual, but I was competing within a few months. I actually rode as soon as the cast came off (naughty!) without a stirrup on that side, but obviously I wouldn't recommend that

I broke mine (with alot of other damage, the horse went over side ways and landed on it.... you should of seem the crushed iron stirrup

) I did it begining of november and started riding (bar the quicky the week after out of plaster because i just couldn't help me self) end of march. My physio always said best way to heal after plaster is exercising it out. However I was told it needed at least a few months few for things like riding and trampoling because it will only rebreak.

My sister broke hers a week ago, horse related but not riding, she was putting the old girl out whilst wearing sandals, turned her ankle and fell sideways, displaced fracture of the fib and tib, pinned last wednesday and fondly thinks that she will be fit to steward at the beginning of August and fit to walk round the great yorkshire show at the beginning of July!

i fell off and badly broke my ankle in 2000. i still have the odfd issue now if its damp or cold. I have been warned of early onset artheritis(sp?) Im guessing by the sounds of it you would be the same? I didnt have pins in mine as the break was too close to some nerves and artery or something like that? 7 weeks sounds really quick for a break like that your lucky! I was in plaster(non weight bearing) for 6 months then a further 4 months on cruthes, so couldnt ride for just over a year. Please take your time and dont rush it, if you try to do too much you will suffer in the long term. go steady on it and take the doctors advice!!! good luck!

I've done both mine (on two seperate occasions!) First one was pinned and plated, in plaster for 7 weeks, 3 operations (compound tib and spriral fractured fib) I got back on my horse the day after I got my plaster off and just rode with one stirrup and gradually did more and more, had lots of physio, walking on uneven ground was hard for months, but its two years this weekend since I did it and its fine now.

Other one was displaced fracture of tib and fib, had a metal rod down the tib and 3 screws, 9mths ago now, but still giving me some jip! (have'nt had physio on it thou, NOT my choice!!)

I only had plaster on that for 1 week, so was back riding at 3 wks after the op, took another couple of weeks before I could do rising trot!

Do whatever you feel comfortable doing, it will certainly let you know if you do too much, increase the excercise daily and just take it easy with the riding! There is no reason why you can't be out competing this summer.

Thanks everyone, from some of your posts sounds like I'm doing pretty well. Just got to take it steady I guess.

I did mine last year my mare chucked me off, broken and plated, broke it ealy march and was back riding and driving by May, last summer was a bit of a struggle, getting myself back together in the saddle and to grips with confidence, but it so gets better!! trust me.. all ok now!.x
