Broken Backs - how long 'till you rode again

Just seen the Broken Wrist post and it made me wonder re. broken backs...

I have a horrible feeling that the consultant said "Three to four months". I've been working on the three months time scale, but the four keeps popping into my mind in my odd down moment.

So, any other broken backed bods out there who know the score?

If it makes any difference, mine is a compression fracture of L2.
 
I got back on a (very reliable) horse after two months whilst still wearing the back brace I was fitted with in hospital. I got back on my 3 year old after four months but that was only because I wanted to wait until the metalwork came off first! I had compression fractures too but my L1 was in five separate pieces so was classed as an unstable fracture and I was in hospital imobilised for three weeks to start with so I suppose it depends on the severity of the injury? :)
 
It's been 12 weeks since I broke my T12 and there's no way I'd get back on right now, it still hurts to walk the dogs and they don't pull. No way I'd risk riding a horse and doing further damage, my mobility is more important.
 
I broke my L1 & L2, I had metalwork put in, and wore a backbrace for a year. The metalwork was then removed and i climbed on a nice steady plodder and got myself back into riding slowly.
 
Wow. So far I'm one of the very lucky ones I guess. It's a stable fracture, so far no metal work and no operation. Also, very little pain, just swelling of the muscle if I over do it, which is controlled fairly well with Ibuleve.

Three months would make it the start of November, four months the start of December. Hm. Seems like a long time at the moment. I know it will pass and I know I am lucky, but patience of this type is not one of my strong points.

All healed and other than occasional back ache when i do too much only the scars to prove it, which makes me one of the lucky ones! I did mine when I was 17... so I've had 5 years to carry on with life as normal and it really hasnt affected me very much at all :D
I hope you have a nice speedy recovery, and dont rush yourself! x
 
See, now I am one of the really sad ones! I broke my back in February,rods and pins over t11-t12. I will never ride again. 2 reasons really, how much more can my back take without me ending in a wheelchair, and the other one is there was only one horse I trully trusted, and he died. If I ever thought about riding again I would need to get on one that I completely trusted, and I will never trust one as much as Benson.
So I am looking at it from another angle, going to Fairoaks sale in about 3 weeks time to look for a driving pony. I am soooo excited!!!
 
Compression fracture of L1 here. Two weeks. Back on the green Arab who tossed me. And the 4 year old TB who'd tossed me 3 days before I broke the darn thing.

I figured I was in a brace - I was protected. :rolleyes:

My doc released me at 4 months. Said, "You can go back to doing whatever you were doing before." A pause while he looked at me and then, "You already are, aren't you?" :p

For the record, that was 11 years ago and I've never had a problem since. Not that I want to encourage you.
 
Lol, I think that if I got on now the Ds would have me hung drawn and quartered, either that or just divorced :rolleyes:. Admittedly I did get back on at the time, before I knew it was broken :rolleyes::o

It's looking like four months is 'the norm'....

Ah well. Into The Game Plan it goes!

Ah Benson, brave and honest decision and I am sure you will have years of fun and pleasure from a driving pony to love and look after and still enjoy all that goes with keeping horses without the confidence issues a lot of us put ourselves through riding. Very good wishes for your trip to Fair Oak and as Mrs M says, updates and piccies please x

Mrs M - no advice re back - just go steady and take docs orders but as for the patience issue, I so empathise. My doc has just told me 6-8 weeks for my torn muscles and ligaments to heal properly and 3 weeks into that I am soooo fed up of crutches and not driving! And I appreciate thats nothing compared to some of you! Did find myself on my local friend/dealers yard today just checking out what might be about for me to try as soon as I'm fit again - despite considering just giving up - looks like i'm a glutton for punishment and will try an try again :-). Chin up Mrs M, patience is a virtue .......... I don't possess either x

I just get a peeved because we were starting to get somewhere. I was riding nearly every day and she was really starting to pick up :D. Seeing D1 on her at Eland Camp brought it home just how much she has matured and come on this year - there was no way she would have coped physically or mentally without those months of work. D1 is going to have some fun on her in the next few months, which is good and I'm pleased that they can do so, just would so love it to be me as well.

Oh well. The sooner I accept it the sooner I'll be able to crack on with the work side instead :)

Fingers crossed for your ouching bits. Hope they too heal quickly and well :)
